Need suggestions on a Ted Williams card to buy

After seeing the awesome collection purchase thread I have decided that I would like to buy my father in law a card of his favorite player Ted Williams.

Now I have given him modern Williams and he really loves them but I would like a PSA card for him to display with his auto'd ball and his "cut" of Ted he has.

I'm thinking a PSA 1 would be OK as the condition will not matter.

What year could I get in PSA 1 for $50-$75? I would like it to be a Topps card fromhis playing days.

Thanks,

Jon

1956 Topps #5 is a gorgeous card that sounds like it fits your criteria.....

I think you could do very well with the Fleer 1959 set, just check ebay.
  • I'm not sure how much a cheap '54 Topps would run. But that's one of my favorites.

    Ted Williams PSA 2

Kinda high based on VCP average.......you can get a really nice one/really cheap one if you are prepared to wait a small bit....

It might be a stretch, but if you can go as high as $350, you may be able to get a PSA 1 '39 Play Ball Williams rookie card. I think that card is very undervalued.
"My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."

1960 Fleer in PSA 6. It counts as during his playing days. I'd argue the 61 Fleer counts too, just b/c its standard that the year after retirement is also considered a part of the career (e.g. 69 Mick, 73 Clemente).

    1958 Topps All-Stars PSA 5

That's a pretty nice PSA 4 (good centering) for under $100. It is a perfect card for setting next to an auto and ball too.

  • Decide which year you'd like to get him, then get to hunting! lol

These each ran me less than $75

Either the 54T or the 56T would be may equal choices.

I sold a BEAUTIFUL 1954 Topps Ted Williams #1 card in a SGC 2 for $45. It was actually via auction format, and the buyer got it WAY under VCP average, but if you are patient enough, you can get good deals!
  • A high grade 1959 Fleer for $20 (or a few ungraded for that amount) might be worth considering

I like the 1954 Topps #1 as the best action picture for the slightly higher dollar ones. Too bad the '50 Bowman Williams isn't as good as the other cards from that set

If your trying to save $$, but want an attractive card from his playing days.

Go with the 1946-1960 "no #9" Exhibit Card of him (some say its from 1939-1946 but that is completely wrong). It is the most common of all Baseball Exhibit cards ever issued (because it was made every years from 1946-1960), but it is vintage and has a nice attractive simple image of him swinging the bat.

Only scan I have is a low grade example (below), but they are easily found for $15-$50 all the time.

Ditto on the Exhibits and also the '58 Topps AS cards are cheap.

Personally I like his 54/55 Topps cards the best.

  • Thanks for all the info.

I already gave him a couple of real beat up 59 Fleers but wanted to try a Topps. I really like the look of the '56. I think that is where I will start looking.
