Interesting!

At Gainsville Coins you can purchase a sealed 2010 green monster box of ASEs for $9400 or a full, opened 2010 green monster box of ASEs for $9100. The Mint strap is worth $300 to someone apparently. For my money, I'll take the opened box (for a $.60 discount per coin) all day long.

  • The opened box might contain grading rejects. I believe you can send coins to PCGS and NGC so that they only grade MS69s and MS70s and send the rest back. They may even only certify the MS70s and send the rest back unslabbed. Perhaps that explains the $300 difference?

...but ... but ... I buy silver eagles as bullion, a hedge, an investment .... What do I care if they are PCGS or NGC rejects?

Spending an extra $300 might be worth it down the road if you ever want to send in a few to get them graded. Buying an opened box almost guarantees that they have been picked through and probably will only find MS69s???

  • Just curious, would it be possible that the handled coins could turn after a while (i.e. milk spots/fingerprints if mishandled)?

If you don't care about grade and if it was handled or not, I would go for the opened box.

I think it might be better off in the long run to spend the extra $300 on a sealed box, though.

You can find milk spots on coins fresh right out of a sealed box. Anything that could contaminate the coins, handling, humidity would be compounded over time. Proper storage is important for sealed boxes and slabs. That said if your buying for bullion, might as well save the money, there is no guarantee a sealed box will contain even one MS70 anyway. I know of a few boxes that were found to be spotty when opened, lucky to find a 67 let alone a 70.

Don't know why anyone would slab 2009 or 2010 ASE though... there are and will be record mintages!

if you just want them for the silver, and no grades, then get the strapless ... if you want them to be graded must get strap --- you can be sure they strapless are searched for sure.

Agree. It's obvious that the strapless boxes have been searched. If you just want ASE's for the silver bullion play, get the strapless box and save yourself $300.
