I am not sure - the date looks just 'ok' could it have been repaired or something?

Otherwise yikes! if that is fake then it is really good I think... image

Looks fake to me. Date looks off, "One Dol." on the reverse looks off, the denticles, especially in the top right of the reverse, look mushy...I'd say RUN!

It looks like a Chinese counterfeit to me. I sent messages to the seller and to Ebay.

    Ya it's fake.
It's one of the older ones, where there's a diagonal gash in the obverse shield at the IBE in LIBERTY. The scammers always photoshop to blur it.

    Thanks Mark,

I don't know the series well enough that I was sure enough to report it. I am thinking of filling the seated dollar holes in my 7070 set. Maybe I will just buy slabbed and crack em.

Richard, there are scary quantities of counterfeits out there, some of them very good ones and others, not. I would strongly suggest that you buy a certified one from a well known, reputable seller (as their are also counterfeit coins in counterfeit holders).

I sent the seller a note asking her/him to weigh it in grams and report back.

    We'll see.

The coin looks fake to me as well. Has the weak liberty typical of early crap fakes.
If I say something in the woods, and my wife isn't around. Am I still wrong?

Bob, looks like he posted your question. I didn't care for the sellers answer, which is basically, "the owner is/was a longtime collector, I sold lots of his coins, why would he have one fake". It's like some folks don't want to take any responsibility for what they sell. The no returns speaks volumes here as well. Pass.

    Message from the seller:

    Dear lathmach,

I have cancelled all the bids on this coin, and have an appt with a coin dealer Wednesday to verify authenticity. I certainly would not sell a coin I thought was not real. All bids placed on this item will be cancelled as ebay will not let me cancel the auction with less than 12 hours to go.

It sure looks like one of the gashed shield fakes. Also, the obv. rims are just too sharp for the mushy central devices. Also note the blobby stars on the left.

She sent me the same email. I told her that it would be wise to have it looked at and weighed. Also told her that fakes have been around
as long as coins have been made. Plenty from the 1800's and beyond.
