I was wondering if there was a wink*wink exhanged between Rick and the "expert" meaning the coin was really a 65 or 66* and to pay strong for it-I'll be back wink*wink. I can't see many pawn shops taking a chance on a generic saint for that much over the spot price of gold. I was thinking he might offer around $1100 or $1200, if not $950
I don't believe that was the case. I just think that Rick doesn't know too much about market trends and coin values, which you can see by the way he mishandled the coin. Even at $1,500 he should be able to make money on this transaction, though I do think he overpaid for it.

I'm no metro-sexual by a long way but you would think that he would have at least got all the dirt from underneath his nails before the close-up. I guess actually cutting the nails was to much to ask.
Remember this was filmed a while ago, and it may have been when 64 Saints were trading above $1600. And maybe the grade was conservative so it definitely had a shot at 65 and was less likely to be a 63. It looked pretty good on camera...

I'd agree with the people that hate the PICKERS t.v. show. All I can think is "rotten scumbags" the whole show. They even addmitted they are only interested in things they can flip for a quick profit to ready made customers. They want to chery pick peoples stuff and offer 20% of what they can resell for. imo they are the scum of the earth.

I agree that $1500 was one of the stongest offers I've seen on an item that is that close in value to the retail side.
The G. Washington lottery ticket was awesome. That guy will net quite a bit more than $8K at auction.

For the comments about the coin being manhandled... I thought the same thing until I realized the shots where it looked like the coin was being held improperly were actually of the coin in the flip... no surface damage should be caused that way.

Do you have any idea what is involved in running a business? Wait, forget I asked that.
From what I have seen on the pickers show they generally buy something for $100, sell it for $150. Businesses need to make money in order to survive.

The show it based on what walks into the shop, so it's not focused on sales. Occasionally they have a tidbit on a past item or record-setting item, but the show basically shows only sales and before/after for repaired/restored items.

There was a big debate recently on what is cherry picking and what is ripping. The pawn shop gets a pass because the seller comes to the buyer but with the pickers show they go around knocking on peoples doors unsolicited. To my mind it is ripping as it was described here , theres no difference. You might as well say somebody doing the ripping with coins is "in business" so why the big debate on it. Personally im of the opinion they are rip off artists and this show will finish them off when people see them gloating over profits later and wise up to them.
Haven't seen the Pickers show but have read a few descriptions on how it works. I really don't see a problem and I do not support unethical behavior. They offer to buy something, and the owner can pass or take the offer. Don't see a problem with it. You can't look down on them because they can sell it for more. That's how they earn a living. The owner of the stuff can pursue other avenues to sell the stuff and make more, but from what I understand they aren't making an effort to sell it at all. If someone went to my parents' place and offered to buy some of the junk they have piled up, they would be thrilled and wouldn't care what it resold for. They are never ever going to research it, figure out what the best selling options are, or actively do ANYTHING with it.
A friend passed away a couple years ago. His wife decided to get rid of some of the furniture and junk they had accumulated over the years. She had three antique store reps come out and make offers, and took the best offer. A few months later, one of the daughters asks me if there's anything she can do because she saw one of their tables in the buyer's antique store for 3x what the family was paid. This was described to me as an "obvious ripoff" of the family because the price was so high compared to what they were paid. I told her she could have researched the items before selling to ensure she wasn't giving away a treasure for cheap, she could have sold them in a different way to try to maximize the return, and she could have sold them direct to end users and avoid a middleman markup... but she did none of those things. They took the easy way out, having people come to the house, require them to buy it all, and pick it up. That's OK, but you aren't going to get top dollar that way. The Pickers are offering money to people for stuff that will sit there rusting away until they die. I would think many of them would be very happy about it.
New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.
Fair enough , however if it were me and i found out guys had went to my elderly parents house to relieve them of thier goods id be pretty angry about it.Apply it to coins now , lets say the pickers one week come across an old whitman album or similar , will you feel the same way when they offer a few bucks for it ?
Just saw the re-run episode with the $20 bill series 1914 star note tonight and checked out the currency forum LInk Looks like the whole thing was staged- notes serial number has been on file since 2001! Has me thinking the $20 saint was staged as well- bet a whole lot of people showed up looking to get $1500 for their coin only to find out it was worth the $900 afterwards....

Just because something shows up in a shop priced at 3 times what they bought it for, doesn't mean they will get that price. The item might sit in the store for a long time, and then the price will come down and they will deal with you were you to try to buy it. All that time they have the overhead of running the building and business and they put the time into acquiring (lugging and hauling) their inventory. It's just business. Having said that, I have been on the other side of this as well. My elderly Dad was offered $200 for a barrister book case (6 shelves with framed glass doors that swing out and tuck up above the books with the top glass being leaded cut glass). I've not seen one of these anywhere for less than $1500 (and have never seen one with the cut glass top door). I would loved to have had it, but Dad didn't ask me because he thought I wasn't interested. The worst of it was, when my Mother came home, she realized the guy had also taken an old vase that was sitting on top of the book case. When they called to ask about it, he said he had sold it already and thought it was part of the deal. One crooked SOB! Pete
