Approx gold value?

Apologies if this is a stupid question but here we go...

I just bought an 1986 1/2 oz Gold Eagle which I like... with it came the coin below which I have no idea what to do with or how much gold value is there. How do you guys figure the value on jewelry pieces like this?

Is that a $5 gold piece? That has nearly 1/4 oz of gold, with a hole, take away a little?

IIRC those were 90% gold, so to get a rough estimate you could weigh it and multiply by .9 to find actual gold content, and then multiply by spot.

Not sure you would actually get that for it if you tried to sell it but it's a start.

If that's a $2.50 coin they started out at a little over 4 grams (4.18) so without wear and the hole it would be about 3.8 grams.

    Hope that helps

  • If it's a quarter eagle then it's exactly what jimq112 stated.

    With today's gold spot at $1065 and estimating 3.5 grams of actual gold weight, you'd get 3.5/31.1 = 0.113 troy ounces of gold X 1065 = $120.

    I guess I should have said it's a 2 1/2. I paid 130 for it so I guess I'm not underwater much.

    Thanks for your advise everyone!
  • Without the hole, it would be worth about $175-$200, off the top of my head, as these have numismatic value. The hole erases any premium it nay have had, but someone would definitely pay more for that than a holed modern eagle. I'd say you did pretty well.

  • Does it have a mintmark on the reverse? It may have a premium even with the hole.

Sadly no mintmark...that would have been nice... :-)

31.1 = grams per troy ounce
