<< <i>Everyone is making good valid points. So far, I have not bought a card from either. Knowing what I know, and being a VCP member, I doubt I ever will. Of course, when I get down to the final 10 of a 320 card set, who knows....... >>

I think that must be their racket - just relisting and waiting until someone whose white whale is a 1971 Jose Arcia to come along and overpay instead of bidding on one of the 3 others listed. Again - I just don't get the business model where listing/relisting fees are paid for with Monopoly money.

<< <i>In my opinion and I always take heat for this: 707's stuff is generally very low end for the grade. Couple that with the very extreme prices, I just look elsewhere. >>

I have been very pleased with the cards and service at 707. If you think his prices are high, check Larry's Vintage Cards, or Where They Ain't.

I found one good deal on WhereTheyAin't...I call for the card....of course they "just sold it"....then I saw the exact same card next week, with an inflated price of around $300......and that is my only experience with them.
  • im going to agree with Mickey on this one.

I think on the quality stuff, 707 prices his cards based on condition within the same grade. So he might have 10 62 Mantle 8's and 10 different prices. If you look at the lowest priced one I gurantee you it will be weak for the grade, thus having his lowest price.

Now sometimes even his lowest priced card within a grade is still over market price but at least he is acknowledging condition differences which most dealers avoid (an 8s an 8 philosophy if you will).

With Levi I have had good conversation and dealings.

His helper on the other hand has been rude to me and my father before. During a trade he really went off on how our cards were terrible for the grade and really offended me. It offended me in part due to the fact that like Mickey pointed out Levi has alot of cards low end for the grade (again due to the fact he has many multiples with the same grade) with all the flaws this guy was pointing out in my "overgraded" cards. I could easily pick out 50 cards graded exactly the same off his tables.

One tip for dealers out there, DO NOT talk about how overgraded someones cards are or how good the graders were to them and not you. Its sour grapes that tends to make the deals harder to complete. Just make your offers or politely decline if you don't like the card, no need to tell me how much my card sucks but you still want it.
Currently completing the following registry sets: Cardinal HOF's, 1961 Pittsburgh Pirates Team, 1972 Pittsburgh Pirates Team, 1980 Pittsburgh Pirates Team, Bill Mazeroski Master & Basic Sets, Roberto Clemente Master & Basic Sets, Willie Stargell Master & Basic Sets and Terry Bradshaw Basic Set

Levi is a great guy to talk to about cards, sports, and life.
He has a fantastic selection of so many cards in all grades.
I've had nothing but great dealings with him over the years.

I believe his 707 name comes from the fact that Mantle was # 7 and is his favorite player. His PO BOX is 707 .

Not to be the Pollyanna around here but I've bought more than a few cards from Larry Mayer and he's always close to market value. He's about the only guy I've ever seen who will revise his prices downward when it's warranted. I don't mean as part of a special or a deal to a valued customer, I mean actually changing his listed prices downward. I've seen him do it more than once.

    Made me look......

Just got done looking through his website for 1951 Bowmans that I need, and his prices for PSA 8s were set at 3x current VCP average. There were a couple that were slightly less than 2x, but just a couple.

[in case 3x isn't clear, it means 3 times] image

Okay, well, he's always been close to SMR for stuff that I've bought from him, like mid 60's sets.

dont' forget that VCP does not include store sales and if added, the average price of many cards would be much higher. Levi, Red Zone etc stay in business for a reason. with the eBay changes coming and store listings no longer being separate from ebay core listings, VCP would be including all sales and it will be intertesting to see if VCP average prices now rise.
