Why I use VCP

Apple 383 is breaking a 67 set on ebay. I've pretty much put that set on hold while finish off 59 and 60, but I thought I would try to pick up a few high pop cards for a single shipping fee. Wrong. Gene Oliver-VCP average $8.00-sold for $27.00. Hal Lanier-VCP average $14-sold for $27. Don McMahon-VCP average $14-sold for $27, and the centering is poor. Lolich-VCP average $15-sold for $27. Bill Hands-VCP average $18-sold for $45.

I retreated from the auction with my tailed tucked between my legs.

Average is just that average, how many times did a specific card sell at or around average price?

Different sale prices make the average.

Every card is different, you know that, as for the one that was somewhat OC someone may have been waiting a long time for it.

VCP is good if you are doing a straight sale with someone, that way you can at least have an idea what a card has been going for

but I wouldn't put too much stock in the averages.

    Just each individual sale.

Hope you have been well Mark.

Edited to add ? at the end of first sentence.
    Good for you.

These cards have plenty of sales. VCP does drop high and low sales in computing the average. The exact method is published on the website. I've read it but can not remember it.

I'll be doing fine when pitchers and catchers report. Heading to Phoenix around the end of March.

Mark .. that sure sounds like they went for a premium. Did the cards look that good? Have they been hard to find recently?

Advance notice: I have about 33% of the set in PSA 8 coming in the Heritage catalog, and about a dozen PSA 9's as well. If you can hold off until late April, you can knock out a bunch. Includes Mantle, Seaver, Carew, Aaron, Clemente, many others stars, high numbers.

yes I know, that was my point. One example could go for 60.00 another for 59.00 and yet others for around 10.00 (for whatever reason) and a slew of others could go for

all different amounts. Making an average of say 25.00 That does not mean that anyone can go and buy or win an ebay auction and expect to

pay 25.00. (Not saying that you were or were not) Look at the Lasorda rookie this exact example is what you will find. Two 450+ examples and 10 or so in the 300.00s

VCP is the new beckett price guide. If I was selling cards and someone said to me why was I selling my example for 35.00 when the VCP average was 25.00

I'd tell them to go and buy one from VCP. (Politely of course)

Just like in years past when I would say buy it from Beckett. Where it was in person and they were able to see that I was polite. :-)

In any event something happened in those auctions that i can't really explain.

    Good for you.
  • When breaking a complete or near complete PSA set the cards do tend to fetch higher prices. Brings a lot of the collectors of that set out at once, verses someone selling 20-30 cards from that set.
From what I can tell, 707 is the DOLLAR STORE compared to deans_cards. For what that guy charges, if I ever bought anything from him I would expect it to be delivered to me in a frickin' limo.

I appreciete VCP because it is informtion I did not have in the past! At the end of the day, it provides information, and more importantly sales data on completed sales. I use this data to complete trades on cards I have and cards I need. It is basically much more informative than "flipping", however, it is based on the currect market information avalable today! In essence, the flipping data that is available today!

  • VCP is just an average of past sales. It can give you an idea how much something will sell for, but it's just an average. Just because The average of a card from past sales is $10, doesn't mean that same card can't sell for $5, or $20 today. Card prices are based on supply and demand.
  • From what I am seeing right now, prices are going up. I have been selling more cards well above the high price of VCP for the grade.

Also when I have been trying to buy, I have seen prices going up vs. how they were before the first of the year..
