By the way, I am a newbie looking to educate myself on basics for those who are laughing at the original post!
I have spent money in the past on sportscards.

Card guys can learn a lot here just by reading. Are you looking to buy gold and silver? If you're looking to buy some, Tim added a couple good links and also there's a good buy/sell board here.

If you're looking to buy, what are your goals?

about the same yearly volume as Heritage....$500 million....so they are obviously doing something right.

Seems like they are good at holding hands with customers and cultivate loyalty that way.

Your education here on this PCGS site and through seeing items in person will tell you if you need to have your hand held or are capable of making your own decisions.

    Just depends on YOU.

    Have a nice day

    Thanks,

I'm looking to buy silver. I prefer coins at the moment although my research is in its infancy. I can certainly make my own decisions.
My goal at the moment is a modest approach in picking up US ASE's. I will read all the threads I can to hopefully attain the knowledge needed
    for a initial purchase.

I mentioned goldline mainly because I did a search here and did not find any banter about them, although I feel their presence on the radio.

I like the pamp suisse and credit suisse bars, they usually sell at a low premium over melt. If you buy on ebay and use bing, one of the many rebaters and ebay bucks you can usually buy them for less than melt.

For coins, you should buy what you like, once you do your research and know that you trust the coin. Gold Eagles and Gold Maples are pretty nice. Lots of people like the gold buffalos also. Some people like first spouse coins, some don't. They don't sell as many so someday if people fall in love with them they might get valuable.

There's plenty of people here who know so much more than I do, I'm sure some will stop by and give you good advice.

The equivalent of a psa 10 here would be a pcgs 70. NCG would be the SGC or BVG. I don't have a problem with NCG 70s.

Many of these threads have weeded out the misc noise and refined things to simpler forms. It comes down to buying from reputable buyers and at the right price. Some good deals at spot come along on the BST each week....esp now as the price trend is still weak. Goldline or Goldmoney? Aren't those guys that "hold" gold for you? Just be sure to get gold coins in hand. And at this early stage buy bullion coins, nothing numismatic with premiums until you've learned more.

    Good luck.

I use Tulving and Apmex to see if my local dealer is close to competitive pricing, then I decide. I wouldn't have any qualms about using Gainesville or Modern Coin Mart for numismatic items.

I also buy from the Mint, especially back in the days when they had offerings that could be considered "speculative", like Gold Buffs, Plats, and special issues that I thought would be collectible at a premium in the future. It seems like just yesterday!image

<< <i>"My goal at the moment is a modest approach in picking up US gold coins."

Soft, if it is gold coinage that you would like to go for then you need to identify your intent. For example, do you want to collect numismatic (collectible) gold coins or do you want to collect bullion gold coins. Are you trying to flip or are you collecting or are you stacking (hoarding). There are no deals with gold, there are better buys and less better buys. Bullion coins are more like a private savings account that hopefully only you know about and they are typically cash in and cash out. Numismatic coins are collectibles and subject to market forces.

If you want bullion gold coins then go to APMEX or Kitco and pick out what you want. There are plenty of other sites such as Gainsville Coins, or some of the advertisers on this pcgs site. You can also go to the BST (Buy, Sell, Trade) link on this PCGS site but because of your newness, you might try and get your feet wet on one of the other sites I mentioned. By far the best place you could go would be to a local coin show or a local coin shop (called a B&M for brick and mortar). That way, you can touch and hold and look and maybe get a story or two from whomever you are dealing with.

    >>

The above thoughts "hammer" at exactly what I have been thinking about for months. Bullion. Stacking. Slowly. I have no interest to flip and am not intrigued with the collectible nature of older metal.
Silver also intrigues me. Its amazing I spent so many years collecting cardboard. Nothing wrong with that as I have had a blast and a nice collection.
Thanks for your well written and thought out response. image

Thoughts on graded vs raw bullion coins? Also, I imagine its the dealers sending these in to be graded mostly. With a smaller amount of collectors buying raw coins and sending some in to be graded for themselves.

    Am I wrong?

If "stacking gold bullion" is what you are really after, stay away from the plastic. Just like in baseball cards. Take a raw, gorgeous card and its worth maybe $50. Get it into PSA 9 plastic, and now its worth $100? Same card, but the new owner just spend $50 extra for 5 cents worth of plastic. Bullion coins are much the same. If you want GOLD, then buy GOLD. If you want numismatic coins, then buy the plastic.

If you can buy PCGS/NGC certified bullion coins at no premium to raw bullion coin prices...then yes buy it with the plastic suit.

If you want to stay with a sports theme while you get started, they make silver bars and coins related to sports. I just got this bar last week for just a little over melt, sometimes they go for around melt or even less.

If you just want silver, I'd just go with whatever tickles your fancy. Be it ASE's, maple leafs, silver bars of various weight, or 90%. The proof ASE's are nice but if you want it just for bullion, I'd stay away as they have a big premium. Same as with graded bullion. They normally have a premium over non graded ones but if you can find one for the same price, go for it! Just watch the BST board. I was lucky and got 18 silver eagles for $300.

Leaning to ASE's to get my feet wet. Any thoughts on proofs over nice ungraded and uncirculated?

Uncirculated ASE's are the most liquid form and most recognizable and verifiable silver you can buy today.

Proof ASE's are intended as, and are in fact collector coins. As others have pointed out, the Proofs have a fairly costly built-in premium which may increase or decrease independent of the silver bullion value. There are reasons that the premium could increase, and there are reasons that the premium could disappear completely.

The Proofs invariably take up alot more space, because they will either have to be slabbed or kept in their original packaging, whereas the Uncirculated Bullion can simply be stored in tubes.

I have a few Proofs, but for the purpose of accumulating silver, there is really no comparison - the Uncirculated ASEs are more efficient, more practical, and less expensive.

Softparade, there are few choices. My first would be storing them in the original US mint green top tubes. Another option are the round clear plastic or square tubes. Just look for the size that are made specifically for ASE. Some places I recommend are Brent Krueger,Jpscorner or Air-Tites.com. Of course ebay is another option too. Here is a auction on ebay as we speak for the green top tubes.
    link

Edit to add: coin safe containers or holders are nice too! They seperate the individual coins from touching each other.
