You have to buy a 1,000 oz silver bar

WeissWeiss Posts: 9,941 ✭✭✭✭✭
What brand do you choose?

I'd take any Comex/Good Delivery bars. But if you had to choose one?

RCM? Engelhard? JM?

Honestly, I'm totally feeling the Peñoles bars.

  • Claw foot tubs are the new rage along with those god ugly vessel sinks. I could see a theif plucking that out in plain sight, but to steal a 70 pound black "door weight"? Not a chance!

Why does anyone "have to" buy a 1,000 oz. bar? image

    JM or Eng.

I'd be too afraid the generic ones would be 90 parts lead and 10 parts silver.

  • If i had to buy a 1000oz silver bar I would buy the cheapest one I could find. Send is over to Academy, have them melt'em down into 100 10 oz stackers. From there I'd make a small lego like castle out of silver. image

Why do people bother to respond to a hypothetical question by not answering it?

YOU HAVE A GUN TO YOUR HEAD AND YOU MUST BUY A 1,000 OUNCE BAR OF SILVER

    which do you choose?

Any of the recognized major refineries would be satisfactory to me---Engelhard, J-M, RCM, etc. My choice would be based on price and availability. I wouldn't pay a premium for one brand bar over another.

Probably RCM or JM. I would worry that an older Engelhard bar would have had more time to be monkeyed around with. And having a gun to my head, I wouldn't have much of a chance to examine the bar. image

I would still buy the cheapest one. Then I'd drop the 1000 ouncer on dudes head and take his gun. From there, I would continue building my silver castle. image

If I could afford a 1000oz bar, I could afford someone to turn them into some dumbbells. Might as well get some use out of it. image

    It's a hypothetical image

We're on a precious metals board and there isn't much going on, and I'm bored.

I lead the charge against large bars for any metal and I've posted several times why I think 90% is the right play for silver in almost any scenario.

But clearly some people are buying 1000 oz bars. Most of us here will probably never own one (either for its impracticality or just because of the cost).

So I thought it would be an interesting game to play: You have to buy 1000 oz bars. Which do you choose and why.

Great hypothetical question and an interesting thread. I would imagine most buyers of large bars use them for manufacturing jewelry, silverware, electronic components, etc.

I would favor the Penoles because you get the extra digit on the purity value at no additional premium. I also like the way they look.
