Private-mint 1998 brass concept dollar sells for $1,125

Seems like a lot of interested buyers for this one (not my coin or auction):
1998 $1 Concept Coin - Gallery Mint Museum

  • That's the closest thing to a private pattern. There were about 110 made, and given to some congressfolks to press for a golden dollar coin, others were distributed at the 1997 ANA convention by Ken Bressett, who was promoting the "Peace 2000 World Coin Project". That piece was one of the first two struck and is from Gallery Mint co-founder, Joe Rust's estate. Back in 2002, a regular issue (one of the other 110 struck) was offered for auction with a reserve bid of $850, so it is not very surprising.
  • Here's the limited edition 1998 GMM Concept dollar in the plush case as Ken Bressett had presented them:

I'm happy to have the original 1995 Concept dollar, which was a freebie from GMM back ina day, plus the 2000-dated piedfort strikes, as well as some oddds and ends from Ken Bressett surrounding that project.

Maybe the bidders thought it was a real coin.image

I surmise the bidders were fairly sophisticated.
The reverse design for that (as well as Daniel Carr's own reverse design) was a finalist in the competition for the golden dollar.

I hope a shill bidder was not involved. The third underbid was $288.

Now that is truly a beautiful coin. Why can we not have such designs on our coins today? Well, likely because we have politically correct and art challenged individuals on the approval committee. Cheers, RickO

I've seen most varieties available over the years, but many only once or so. I have not seen silver 1995 or 1998 pieces available.

I actively researched these on SmallDollars.com, GMM ScrapBook, the bay and other areas.

Thanks for the TrueView cardinal. That's more I can send to PCGS.

a Silver 1998 example sold for $611 Sunday evening on eBay. I was the under-bidder at $601.25 and would have bid higher except for a few obligations I had to meet. I regret not doing that, post auction depression if-you-will. it was an impeccable example, the first 1998 I have ever seen at auction.

I've seen several in ICG holders. I've never seen one in silver until now. These things have gone the way of the CSA 1c tokens that were all over the place in the 1970's for less than $10. It's a good bet that many folks who own the "Concepts" have no idea how valuable to collectors they are.

I bought my 1998 Bressett Concept for a couple hundred bucks a while back.

The $1,125 hammer seems way too high, I too wonder if it got shilled up. Typically this item can be bought for $300 or less if one is not in a hurry. My experience is 100 made is not a low mintage.

I was following the silver 1998 Concept, I lost interest once the price popped above $300 range.

I think $611 hammer was a fair price for the 98 Silver Concept.

I've been looking for one ever since Cardinal posted his a couple of years ago. I missed this one as I can't do eBay and it lessens my odds of landing one

As I understand it, eBay does not maintain the links for auctions that ended 6-1/2 years ago.

My bad. Need to start looking at the dates on a thread.

I wonder how much Carr's concept dollars are now worth?

I bought all of his remainIng inventory 8 years ago.

I really liked his Bossie Coleman issue. The reverse depiction of the eagle is to be admired.

I also acquired all of his remaining Sackawea (sic) Dollars

I will have to pay more attention to ebay.... these are very attractive and the price is not unreasonable. Cheers, RickO

    I own a 1995 Concept in silver.
It was special ordered, like alot of my Gallery Mint items, direct from Gallery Mint.
It has correct collar & struck on 1 oz .999 fine.

Over the past 20+ years I've come across goofy, one off Gallery Mint items I did not think to special order when they were in production.
I typically try to win high bid on these when the opportunity presents and my budget allows.

    If you google

you'll find articles & my images detailing some of my Gallery Mint Special Orders & ebay auction wins & Colorado coin show purchases.

Are the centers struck in gold? I know there is one in space so maybe some escaped the mint.

I really want one of his 2001 bi-metallic silver/bronze concepts but they'll have to wait for now as I can't find one under $300. They really look killer though imo. Just picked up a couple 2019 Carr concept dollars however...

Great information. It would also be great to see pics of the 1995 if you have them!
