any way to test for silver

on foriegn coins, and others that might be silver is there any way to test it ?

    I think having a world coin book comes in handy because you can look it up and see if its silver.

    One of those Krause world coin books is good as reference

    Yep, get a krause. But buy it used. Look on eBay or even library sales. They'll run you $40 or $50 new, but you don't need a new one to find out the silver content. Buy a used one for $15 and put the extra money into silver rounds image

    Try the ring test---drop the coin on a hard surface and listen to the sound it makes. Silver has a very distinctive sound which is quite melodious. It won't tell you the exact fineness but at least you'll know it isn't a nickel alloy.
