So if I wanted to put a set of Raw Circ Morgans.....

rld14rld14 Posts: 2,390 ✭✭✭
So I have another silly idea.

I always liked the look of circulated coins, especially that "CircCameo" look and well... I like Circulated Morgans with dark fields. Anyway I have decided to put a set together in F or so, meaning the odd VG coin and the odd even VF coin if I like the look, but effectively the coins are going to grade fine.

So which ones are going to be the monsters to find? I already know the 85-CC is going to be a disaster to find, I actually saw a VF one today but it was light and had hairlines, not the look I want.

What say ye learned members of the forum?

Hmm - are any of the Morgan dollars tough to find in VG-VF? Maybe some experts will enlighten both of us. I guess some of CC's may be, as they are more plentiful in Unc thanks to the GSA....I don't see too many of the 1921's worn down that much. I do know that the 'tough dates' like 93S and 89CC seem to be present at just about every show and auction, so it's just a matter of $$ to acquire those. I'm guessing you'll skip the 95P image The way you knocked out that Barber half set, you should have no problem with these.

    1903-O
I think this was concidered rarer than the 93-S before some mint bags of 03-Os were found.

    Most CCs
An old oldtimer told me he could never complete Morgans from circulation and had to buy some of the CCs from a dealer, although I can't remember which years.

I think the two dates have already been said: 1885CC and 1903O. I think that will be a fantastic set once you put it together. Will be a nice challenge, too. We want pictures when you are finished! image

Edited: I think the 1880CC and 1881CC might be a little on the tough side, but not impossible.

Just addressing the CC dates -- After the 1885-CC everything else will seem semi-easy, except...

1881-CC is tough to find in less than Mint State, real hard in lower circ grades, and more expensive than you're going to like.
1889-CC is just expensive, but there are plenty of them.
1893-CC is not as espensive (but not cheap) and is readily available.
1892-CC is surprisingly scarce in lower circ. grades.
    1880-CC is just slightly easier.

The 1897 never seems to come in low grades, and same for the 1921-D.

(I have the entire CC set in PCGS Poor-01, and I wouldn't want to try to do it again.)
    When in doubt, don't.

    Thanks!

I figured the 03-O would be the monster as that was the ULTRA key before the treasury releases.

Here's the kind of look that I am going for...

I have thought about doing a set like this myself. I was going to start off as a date set and then expand out from there. Good luck.

It's a fun set to do. I put one together about 5 years ago. The key or 'tough' dates have already ben discussed. The '89-CC, '93-S & '94 are all out there and very plentiful in the grade and look your shooting for. They are just all about the money...but they are out there. The '85-CC was the last coin I found and the '93-O was tough to find a nice circ with the look I wanted. I wasn't particulary focused on them however until I got towards the end of the set and they were becoming the sticking point. Good luck and I hope your publish pictures of your album pages (if that's where they're going) when you get done.

While there will be some tough spots (not impossible), it should not be terribly hard to do in that condition. Likely take 12 to 18 months. Cheers, RickO

    I say 'Good Luck!!'

No way you're going to find them.

In those grades they're mostly dipped out, blast white, hairlined coins.

I think you'll spend a lifetime completing that collection.

    Noble effort though!

Buy higher grade ones, contact the Chinese fake sellers, and ask to run them through their "wear" machines for a month.image

Putting together a Morgan circulated set with the same look is a great endeavor that can be very enjoyable. Not sure if a circ-cameo look in F/VF exists. Here's what I like, VF with a nice crusty look in 94, 95, 96 and 99 S.

I just saw two '81-CC in a dealer's stock. Both F-12. One is $300 and the other is $375. Both raw. Ouch!
