How to turn $157.25 into a 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle thenavarro's journey, June 10 + pair of Michael

I watched with interest Elemenepeo's run toward the 52 Mantle, and I also saw thunderdan's beautiful Mantle that he purchased and recently posted. I have decided that I will add a 52 Mantle to my collection, and while seeing Sportscardtheory's quest for a T206 Wagner begin, I thought that would be a fun way to go for the Mantle and would make adding it a little bit extra special for me.

If you are tired of these types of threads, then read no further, this isn't the thread for you and I don't want to waste your board enjoyment time.

I pretty much have no rules for mine. It's going to be a series of buy/sell transactions and might even trade if need be. I am sure there are times where I might take a step backward as unlike sportscardtheory, I don't make money on every transaction, sometimes I make bad decisions and have to cut the losses and move on. I am going to start with an investment of $157.25 and work that up to a 1952 Mantle. I don't have a time limit and don't have parameter's yet for the Mantle, although I would love to be able to get a signed 1952 Topps Mantle. The couple signed Mantle's that I've seen have been in the neighborhood of $15,000-$18,000. However, I would be satisfied with a decent looking low grade Mantle which should be able to find for around $5,000.

As my initial investment, I bought something that I'm comfortable with and know the market well.

Richard Nixon autographed book

Total cost $157.25

I buy these books and make souvenir typescripts out of them (much like the way custom card guys make custom autographed pieces). Nixon would not sign copies of his resignation letter during his lifetime, so the only ways to get souvenir copies of them, is to make them after he signed the blank page.

The Constitution (Article 2, Section 1) specifies that if the President resigns, the office of President devolves on the Vice President. The 25th Amendment states that in case of resignation, the Vice President “shall become President.”

The mechanisms for a Presidential resignation are as follows: The President signs a letter, addressed to the secretary of state, specifying the time at which resignation from the office becomes effective. The Vice President is notified by the secretary of state and takes the oath of office at the designated time.

On the morning of August 9, 1974, the day following President Nixon's televised resignation speech, White House Chief of Staff Alexander Haig presented this letter to President Nixon to sign. The President's resignation letter is addressed to the Secretary of State, in keeping with a law passed by Congress in 1792. The letter became effective when Secretary of State Henry Kissinger initialed it at 11:35 a.m.

Thanks for all the well wishes and support. I wasn't sure how the board would respond to another one of these types of threads. The 1st auction has been paid for by the buyer, so here's the final tally for that one.

    $319.00 Best Offer
$6.00 Shipping charge I charged him
    (22.14) Ebay final value fee
    ( 0.35) Ebay insertion fee
    ( 9.73) paypal fee
(12.00) my cost to ship and insure properly

Total Net from first auction $280.78 Total profit to date: $280.78 minus $157.25 equals $123.53

Yikes, the fees are eating me up already. Oh well, they are a necessary evil. I bought another small item already to flip, but I'm headed to take a shower, so I'll be back later with it.

This will be a slow process I'm sure, so don't expect a wild sprint. My main focus is still going to be my signed rookie card collection.

Nice work, Mike. This will be a fun quest for you I'm sure.

  • Good luck Mike and good start. I am contemplating doing something similar myself, but instead of flipping items, I may just liquidate a large part of my collection. My first son is due in about a week, and growing up part of the joy of collecting with my own father was finding cards of a favorite player or team. I would like to think he would have interest in my cards from the 50s, 60s, and 70s but in reality he will have no connection to the players or era (and in reality he may not even go for sports when the time comes).

If I transfer a good part of my collection into a Mantle or maybe a high grade Aaron Rookie (one of the few undervalued cards IMHO), I will have a ton more fun re obtaining what I sold off if it so interests my son or possibly go in another direction entirely.

Here is a purchase I made today. It's an autographed Jimmy Carter book.

    image

I paid $29.99 plus $4.00 shipping in an ebay sale here:

    Jimmy Carter book auction

That takes me to having $280.78 minus $33.99 = $246.79

plus the Carter book. Once the Carter gets here, I'll create something and have it available. I'll be looking for more deals with the $246.79.

Good price on the Nixon book.

"Real Peace" is definitely worth reading before you flip it.
Fast and easy read; not complex and many/most of the
concepts apply today, though in somewhat different ways.

It's been a bit since I read it, but it was really good.

Made another purchase tonight. These two Gerald Ford signed index cards. $53.00 delivered.

    image

That takes my available cash down to $93.79 ($146.79 minus $53.00) and leaves me with the:

Jimmy Carter signed book (finally arrived so I'll make something out of it in the next couple of days to sell)
Richard Nixon signed book (still waiting on it to get here)
2 Gerald Ford signed index cards (waiting on them to get here)

Finally had a chance to get creative with my purchases. I now have $93.79 in available cash and these items available for sale. I'll probably offer them on a couple message boards and privately for a week or so and then go to ebay if they haven't sold. Made some neat souvenir typescripts out of them.

Made a purchase today. I bought TWO of these for $99.97 delivered from Steiner. At the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City, Tommie Smith and his teammate John Carlos came in first and third, respectively, in the 200-meter dash. As they received their medals, each man raised a black-gloved fist, creating an image that will always stand as an iconic representation of the complicated conflations of race, politics, and sports. Intriguingly, it was the third man on the podium, a Caucasian athlete named Peter Norman, who suggested that Smith and Carlos share the black gloves seen in their salute, after Carlos forgot his pair. It is why Smith raised his right fist and Carlos raised his left fist. Tommie Smith has hand signed this 20x24 photograph commemorating the moment. A Steiner Sports Certificate of Authenticity is included.

This will be my first venture in my post outside of my comfort realm of Presidential autographs. It might turn out to be a bad choice, but hey, this ain't life or death, it's for fun. image I have a plan to place one of these in a national catalog auction in March (firm shall remain nameless for now), and I feel that I'll make enough to turn a nice profit on these.

After this purchase, I'm down to $53.82 in cash, and now will have to offer:

2 20x24 Tommie Smith signed fist raised photos
    Richard Nixon resignation letter
    Jimmy Carter typescript on Peace
Gerald Ford whimsical "mock" WH card
