ERROR CARD OF THE WEEK 12/31/09 (1984 Topps Proofs - Gary Matthews/Steve Carlton)

Greetings! The last thread for 2009!

This thread looks at the 1984 Topps Proofs. There are 66 cards in total. All seem to be very limited in production. In addition to having a blank black you can also tell the difference by the small portrait photo. The proofs inset portrait photo never extends outside the borders, whereas on issued cards the portrait picture extends out the black border.

There are 3 key errors in the proof "set".

Steve Carlton's card has Gary Matthews photo in his portrait photo inset.

and

Gary Matthews card has Steve Carlton's photo in his portrait photo inset.

Lastly, Manny Trillo is pictured in an Indians uniform, rather than the Expos -- which differs from the 1984 issued set. (I'll post this pic when I find it).

    The proofs seem to have brighter colors. Have never seen one "live". You really should start a blog, the information you have seems endless.

    I will be startin a website with a blog. It is my 2010 project. I am actually underway now, but I don't wanna release it until its somewhat complete.

    hey, I just got a 2 card lot of the Manny Trillio. (had to buy both of them else he wouldn't sell them to me).

    You can find blank back proof cards for most Topps issues. The interesting thing about these " encased " proofs is that they are not proofs of anything that was actually issued. Topps eventually changed the design to make the small portrait pictures extend beyond the box. Blank back proofs of the non encased regular issue can also be found, presumably for all cards eventually included in the set, unlike this limited sheet of proof cards that was never expanded to a full set for actual production. Thie 84 Encased "set", the 82 Blackless error "set" and the 85 Mini "set", both regular and blank backs, are some of the toughest Topps issues of the 80s

    Yeah, thanks for adding bishop. Thats why I couldn't pass up on the 2 Trillios.

    I am hoping to sell one of them ASAP to buy something else. I don't really need 2. I could have had the whole set of proofs, but opted against it.

    I need to focus on the error niche.
