Does PCGS have a "First Day of Issue" Label?

I don't mean First Strike. I mean "First Day of Issue" as in First Day Cover coins, the ones that can actually be documented as being struck on the first day of minting.

This applies to the Prez Dollars and to the State Quarters, I believe.

I've accumulated a bunch of First Day of Issue Prez Bucks. The ones I opened and looked at weren't any more notable for condition than any of the rolled coins I've seen. Has anyone had extensive experience in screening First Day of Issue coins for high grades?

Yes, but these have nothing to do with the FDI coin covers image

  • Does the mint keep track of the first coins struck? That would be a good money maker for them.

"first day of production" which are on the first day covers of president dollars and quarters. These if anything would come close to first strike coins.

    e.g.

The American Presidency $1 Coin Cover Series showcases the Presidential $1 Coins. Twelfth in the series is the 2009 Zachary Taylor $1 Coin Cover. This limited-edition cover – only 40,000 will be produced – features two Zachary Taylor $1 Coins from the first day of production at each United States Mint facility – September 9, 2009 (Philadelphia), and September 10, 2009 (Denver). The coins are mounted on a handsome display card inside an envelope with a U.S. 44-cent Flag postage stamp. Additionally, the cover features a portrait of our 12th President in front of an American flag. The postmark of “November 19, 2009, Louisville, KY,” marks the day the Zachary Taylor $1 Coins were first released to the public.

I thought PCGS will slab these if you send in the entire coin cover.

That's my question. Does anybody know? Does PCGS have a First Day of Issue Label for the First Day Cover Prezbucks?? Thanks.

Grandam, your response confuses me. Your slab shows FDI, but you say that it has nothing to do with the First Day Covers.

PCGS slabs Presidential Dollars sent in sealed boxes dated the 1st day of release. The package must be post marked on the 1st day. This is what the FDI Dollars are.

The are marked 1st Day of Issue and that is what I thought you asked,,,,, if they label anything FDI.

I don't know if they would label the FDI Coin Covers in the same label or not? Best to call customer service to find out?

this thread may answer your question Seems that they will take the covers but only put them in FDI slabs not First Day of Produciton. NGC will grade the entire cover.

Thanks, pf70collector. I had forgotten that thread. Looks like I'll be keeping my sets in their original cardboard mailers until I sell them.

If I opened one set and still had them in the sealed boards, I wonder if that maintains the integrity of "1st Day of Production"?

It would be nice to see if they are any better quality than the rolled coins.

"...I wonder if that maintains the First** Day of Production.**"
The answer to that question, is No. The item has to be delivered i.e in the hands of PCGS, within 24 hours of its release.
