Choose the Shield Nickel for the type set...

Both of these coins have Anacs photo certificates. I won't divulge the grades until later. Which coin would you prefer in your type set, and a brief reason. Thanks,

JJ

Yeah, sorry, something is going on with my white balance lately. Both coins are the same color, and are more like the 1883.

It's really hard to make a decision based on those pictures. But, if it's green v. brown, I'll take the green. The '82 (if it hasn't been cleaned, which is definitely a possibility as I read the photo), is the more appealing coin based on strike and lack of spotting. I really can't determine the luster of either coin, but I'll WAG that the coins '82 50-55 and the '83 40-45.
  • I too prefer the green, scuffed up one. The '83 has a weak strike that annoys me. But, hey, that is me! We each have our own preferences...

The Green one looks well cleand. So I'll take the one on the right. But that is just me.

I would wager to guess that the 1883 has deffinetly nothing to do with a weak strike at all, it's just the nature of the series.
I like the '83, it looks like the most natural of the two. image

The green one is a better grade but what's with the rub on the reverse

I would look for another example that has a nice strike like the 1882 and nice surfaces like the 1883.

This is not an expensive coin.
  • *This is not an expensive coin.*

But it must be ANACS photo certificate graded. And they don't make 'em any more...

But it needs to have an ANACS photo cert, it's a little more difficult to locate.

Exactly. Of course, I will always be on the look out to upgrade. These are the two I have now. The one I decide not to keep, will get sold.

I'm sorry to say that I would suggest patience given the two choices.

    If forced, I'd choose 1.

I like the look of the 82-sharper detail. The 83 looks cleaned to me?

I'm in the 82 camp as well, I like the strike better and psychologically I'm biased to 82's over 83's (don't know why).image

I'd pass on both: mushy date on the first and too much wear for a common type coin on the second.

The 1882 is a nicer looking coin to me. The "2" is poorly struck, which is a negative, but the coin is much more pleasing to the eye than the other one, which has spots and minor damage.

Thanks for all of the replies. The one on the left is graded AU50/50. The one on the right is graded EF40/40

1882 is better. The '83 looks a bit beat up and has seen better days. I love Shield nickels. image

I'd go with the 82....just seems to have a little more detail in the shield...of course the date on the 83 is stronger...but I will stick with the 82

  • It's weird the 1883 looks to have more overall wear but the date on the 1882 or the one on the left shows more wear on the date itself. I'd look for a third choice if possible if not go with the 1882.
