Hey Morgan folks: what date do you have a special weakness for... over and over?

OK, fellow big coin addicts... time to 'fess up.

One of the MANY things that makes Morgan collectors so numismatically special is their often giddy willingness to buy multiple examples of the same date and mint mark. Even if we've already got two or three, we can't seem to pass up another pretty one.

I have two that I'm a sucker for -- 1895-S in circulated grades, and the 1901 doubled die reverse. I'll spare you the tacky details, but I'm well past the limit of sensibility on the 1901. I just love 'em!!

Now who's next? Bare your soul. Spill your guts. Come clean. What are the one or two dates that you just can't seem to stop buying?

I won't tell your spouses. Promise.

  • not a morgan fan.. but I have a special place in my heart for 1876-CC image
Whenever I see a type II reverse, I buy it. Right now I have 6 Type II rev, 2 DDO, 1 DDR & 1 normal date.

  • I gotta go with you there, KK

If I found an "real" 1876 Morgan $ I'd buy it as fast as I could.

My passion is for the early S mints. The strikes are fantastic.

The 78 varieties are also fun to chase.

1900 o/cc. This is a cool coin because the last cc was issued seven years earlier.

  • PCGS 1881-S prooflike dollars. They are plentiful, cheap and look great! I think I have three of them now.

I have a fondness for the 1895-S in high circulated condition (AU 50- AU 58). It is one of the most elusive Morgans in existence. I see many more 1893-S available than I ever do the 1895-S. A definite sleeper.
  • I have at least 5 80s (used to have many more). They just look so good, either killer 67/68 coins, or deeeeep mirror black and white cameos. I can't stop myself.

Hello MANSCO! I totally agree with you!

Over a year ago I decided to try building a PCGS "grading set" of all the circulated grades from AG03 to AU58 (17 coins) for just one date. I picked 1895-S. Naive little me thought I'd be able to buy the XFs and AUs already in PCGS holders, while I'd most likely have to "make" the lower grades from raw coins and crossovers.

I'm doing OK on the lower grades -- I even made a Fair-02!! -- but I don't have any of the AUs yet. It isn't an issue of $$$... the silly things just don't come up for sale. Or are you beating me to all of them?

In case anybody's wondering, or can help, I still need the following grades: 04, 08, 12, 15, 20, 45, 50, 53, 55, and 58. I suspect it would be impossible for a Morgan to grade Poor-01 and still have the date and mint mark legible, but such a coin would be the toughest one to get for a grading set!

This exercise has been a HUGE educational experience, and I heartily recommend it to anyone who has more patience and determination than sense.

  • I'm not a big Morgan collector, but I have a weakness for the 1893-P for some reason. It's not the most common date, but not a key date either. I think it started with a VERY choice XF coin that I still have with me today. I haven't seen a single one I didn't like, though.
