WTB 1970 Topps Baseball

I won't be doing this very fast (OK, who am I kidding??) but I am looking to complete my 1970 set as time and money allow. I'm at about 30% right now, with about half of the key cards already bought but some needing upgrade. If anyone is looking to sell off spares or if they are retiring their set, please post a list here or PM me.

My set(s) are under the name 'bregia', but I haven't added the PSA shipment of commons on it's way to meso it's a bit incomplete. The set grades at around 7.5-7.6 right now, so I'm looking for mostly 8's and above going forward.

Thanks

  • Hello ... is the SMR pretty accurate on this set? Going to start one up and wanting to know if I can use this tool as a guide. Thanks for helping the new guy on the boards.

No more accurate than for any other year, IMO. I'd say 80% of the commons go for 70-80% of SMR right now, with the tougher ones of course fetching more.

  • bking, glad you got the card I sent.

As for the SMR in relation to price accuracy, bking is right. There are about 10-15 percent or so of the commons that typically sell for more than SMR, some of them - significantly more. If you are looking for PSA-8 or better, that's where you can find yourself spending upwards of 5-6 times SMR price on a common. Some of the names right off the top of my head are:

    521 Koonce
    536 Kekich
    7 Indians rookies
    13 Hiatt
    343 Checklist
    125 Johnson
    523 Pena
    661 Robertson
    96 Cardinals Rookies

I am a little over 90% complete - thought I'd be complete by the end of this year, maybe by the time pitchers & catchers report.

Hacker's memory is pretty accurate. Here's the 20(ish) toughest by raw population. These are the cards having the fewest number in PSA 8 or higher:

    7 Indians Rookies
    9 Checklist 1-132
    13 Jack Hiatt
    18 Carlos May
    52 Bruce Dal Canton
    97 Joe Moeller
    123 Don Gutteridge
    125 Deron Johnson
    128 Checklist
    244 Checklist
    343 Checklist
    424 Mike Kilkenny
    430 A. Messersmith
    432 Checklist 460-546
    464 Johnny Bench
    468 Jerry Koosman
    469 Sam Mcdowell
    486 Terry Harmon
    518 Bill Melton
    523 Jose Pena
    525 Jerry Adair
    531 Ron Clark
    536 Mike Kekich
    542 Checklist 547-633
    543 Clyde Wright
    588 Checklist 634-720

Here's the 20 or so hardest to get in high grade (8 or better) by percentage of items submitted. Not surprisingly, it's littered with key cards as most of us are smart enough not to submit icky commons:

    21 Athletics Rookies
    61 Nl Batting Leaders
    140 Reggie Jackson
    189 Yankees Rookies
    198 Mets Celebrate
    300 Tom Seaver
    350 Roberto Clemente
    453 Rod Carew
    455 Brooks Robinson
    458 Pete Rose
    459 Reggie Jackson
    461 Carl Yastrzemski
    462 Hank Aaron
    464 Johnny Bench
    470 Willie Stargell
    500 Hank Aaron
    530 Bob Gibson
    580 Pete Rose
    600 Willie Mays
    630 Ernie Banks
    660 Johnny Bench
    700 Frank Robinson
    712 Nolan Ryan

  • Thanks guys .. well in looking thru the 125 or so I have graded I see about 3 here that I have (some of the checklists). Looks like I need to start getting the low pops and the stars.

I may sell some of my 1970 GAI packs to fund this journey.

    Thanks for the support here.

  • << <i>Looks like I need to start getting the low pops and the stars. >>

The stars will always be available on the boards & ebay simply due to volume. Focusing on commons in bulk will more likely gain you closer to completion quicker. As I progressed through the set, I picked up the lower pops in PSA-7 with plans to upgrade as I saw them for the right price. The AS cards are very tough - especially McDowell, Bench Koosman, Yaz & Aaron - all have centering issues.

If you have any need/interest, I have the following available:

    #60 Wynn PSA-8
    #78 Lahoud PSA-7
    #130 Brown PSA-7
    #199 ALCS GM 1 PSA-6
    #232 Didier PSA-6
    #462 Aaron AS PSA-7
    #466 Marichal AS PSA-7
    #474 Kelley PSA-7
    #580 Rose PSA-6

    Mike
  • Thanks ... I sure might be interested. Can you tell me what pm means and how to do it? I see the boards always say 'pm me'. What does that mean?

At the top of the page under the 'navigation' option, click on profile. Toward the bottom of the page that comes up you will see the option to 'allow private messages.' Yours, by default, is set to off - click it on and you will be able to receive messages that only you and the sender read. They will appear under the collectors universe logo on the top left of the page.

On each individuals post to a message (top right of every post)- do you see the letter with a red arrow, envelope, lightbulb, glasses, padlock & printer? Those are icons that will help you with other options. Simply put your cursor on each one and you will discover what they are for.

If you want other users to know a little about you, check the 'profile visability' option and a pair of glasses will appear with each of your posts and your profile will be visable to everyone. Click on my glasses and you will see about me what others will see able to see about you.

    Mike

PS: The Wynn and Aaron are on hold for another member and might not be available.
