Why aren't PCGS boxes green?

Not green colored (been there...), RECYCLEABLE.

Pretty irresponsible and Orange Co. if you ask me....

Dealers throw out tons of them. Go to any major show and towards the end of it you'll see them scattered all over the floor. And I can only imagine, for example, how many dumpsters Heritage fills with them every year.

I've seen them offered for sale. But considering that they are sometimes given out for free, I wouldn't feel right selling them.

Wouldn't making them out of a substance that easily decomposes cause some outgassing problems that could either damage coin surfaces or lead to colour changes in reactive metals?
  • I thought they had to be blue do to the impact that grading results often have on the submitter.

Certainly wouldn't help anything. Choosing a very stable plastic is a good idea.

Recycling is a process designed to make the initiator feel better. It isn't cost effective or a significant help to the environment (with very few exceptions). Sometimes the energy costs alone make it a foolish idea but is is often done anyway because of laws pushed through by "environmentalists".

So if it makes you feel good, do it. But don't worry about the PCGS boxes.

Mark, if you have a table at shows you might want to consider a giveaway of free PCGS boxes. I know the one time I did this at the Santa Clara show it was a big hit and folks appeared appreciative.

There are LOTS of things that people sometimes give away for all sorts of reasons, but that doesn't mean they don't have value, does it? There's a whole separate giveaway message forum here on the boards that is full of examples of things that are given away, and at ANA and FUN shows PCGS has often given out things like American Silver Eagles at the Set Registry luncheons. I was once even given an MS63 St. Gaudens; that darn sure has value. Just because one person's cost of acquisition is low or nill doesn't mean the identical items that everyone else has don't have value.

I won't debate you because I don't feel the need to change your mind and hope you don't feel the need to change mine but I had to chuckle at the idea of a mass twice the size of Texas--my first thought was show me an image of this supposed "mass"--but later in the article they explain that it is "invisible"....

NGC uses cardboard and it works just fine. And the NGC boxes are easier to re-use, because they fit both PCGS and NGC slabs.

One of the dumbest moves PCGS retains. People pay premiums for NGC plastic boxes and the ADVERTISING is on the outside of the box.

Never understood why PCGS just doesn't make em a skosh bigger.

  • Dealers: Please consider giving away extra boxes to collectors at shows. They are a good way to store coins, many collectors want some and the giveaway can earn you some goodwill.

They don't need to be any bigger to hold thier product. NGC just makes an oversized slab that needs a different box and I don't see why PCGS should try to waste more plastic to accomodate them.

They don't throw them away. They either leave them out on their table for others to take or they sell them to dealers who sell them on EBay.

One high end dealer puts a pile of them out on the table with a sign that reads "$2 each" and he claims he can raise almost $100 over two days.

Now we know what you are thinking, because the first thing that came to our mind when we heard about its size (Uhh, Texas?) is, “Why the heck haven’t we been spying on this land from space, in the comfort of our satellites?” Good question, my friend, and here’s the answer: The incredible mash of garbage is actually more like a soup, half floating, half sunken, consisting of 80 percent plastics and has been said to weigh up to 3.5 million tons.

    image

Cynthia Vanderlip, manager of the State of Hawaii’s Kure Atoll Wildlife Sanctuary, cut open the dead body of a fledgling Laysan albatross (nicknamed “Shed Bird”) to find more than half a pound of plastic in its stomach. Concentrated on the right are all the items retrieved from inside the bird: Plastic lighters, bottle caps, and other plastics that are carelessly tossed often wind up floating on the ocean surface, where they are occasionally consumed by foraging seabirds and other marine creatures.

    Why aren't PCGS boxes green?

Here is PCGS's side of this story.

Today's PCGS box is full-blue and is guaranteed to match the beautiful color of the insert on all PCGS slabs. Millions of dollars were spent guaranteeing the full blue color of all PCGS boxes. Unforutnately, exposure to humidity causes the plastic to lose its natural blue beauty. It really hasn't been fair to make PCGS replace boxes whose color might have changed because the collector lives in high humidity places like Florida and Hawaii. As a result, starting January 1, PCGS will no longer guarantee that the full-blue color of its plastic boxes. For collectors who owned PCGS boxes prior to January 1, PCGS will continue to replace the plastic box if it no longer is full-blue, provided the collector can provide proof of the date of ownership of the box. If the box is sold after January 1, however, PCGS will no longer guarantee full-blue.

BELIEVE IT OR NOT, but I have 3 NGC boxes where their own slabs don't fit. Imagine that, having a NGC box and a mess of overgraded nGC graded MS67 coins and the lid doesn't fit. Not that this surprises me a bit since it's coming from NgC but, COME ON, how many folks are out there that got stuck with these boxes.

The PCGS green or blue boxes are excellent for storing BU rolls (from cents to quarters).

The older NGC boxes are not as sturdy as the PCGS boxes for this purpose.
