Willie Mays - 1955 Bowman. What will it grade?

Hey Guys/gals,

Just picked up this card, but do not have it in hand yet. I do NOT have a pic of the back, but was told the back was clean. What do you think it will grade?

I do not like the right side at all. Trimmed IMO.

Looks like a 5 to me. And I am seldom wrong by more than 3 or 4 grades.

I'll say 4.5..5.5 range. The looks nice I'd like to own it.

    I agree between a 4 and a 5. Nice example Doug.

    Good for you.
  • PSA 2, I see flaking and a crease or wrinkle on the right side about level with his hip.

Edit because I am drunk and can't type.

    I say a generous PSA 5,

It might be the scan but the right sid looks like it has a slight wave to it maybe? I have never owned a '55 Bowman so I dont know if some were cut that way or not..
  • DboneesqDboneesq Posts: 18,219 ✭✭
Here is the card guys ... yup, it was already graded but I didn't want to say anything about it being graded. I wanted to get some unbiased opinions. Bill (LSUTIGERS) was the closest, but not for the reasons he thought. That "wrinkle" on the right, by Willie's hip, is a scratch on the case. HOWEVER, if you look at the back, there seems to be three problems ... at the top in the black area there are tiny spider wrinkles ... tiny wax stain on middle left of card ... and at the bottom middle, about 1/16th of an inch from the bottom, looks like a tiny crease. (I guess the seller was not correct when he said the reverse was "CLEAN"!

ANYWAY, I am more than happy with this card. It LOOKS a LOT better than it graded. I would buy cards that look like this all day long. (With shipping I paid $30.00)

I may crack it and resubmit. I have only done that once and it was on my last submission. I cracked a '69 Reggie Rookie out of a BECKETT "2" and it came back in a PSA "5".

You guys think it's worth cracking or will those three items keep it at a 1.5?

    Even collectively that doesn't merit a 1.5.

Is the wrinkle at the top a tear?

Also, is that an MK on the glove/number on the reverse?
Kiss me once, shame on you.
    Kiss me twice.....let's party.

The wrinkle is NOT a tear. There are a few of them ... could even be indentations from being underneath a piece of paper when someone was writing on the paper ... but I think they are tiny wrinkles (could it have come that way from the factory?)

It is NOT a MK on the glove ... that is the way the card was printed ... those are the outlines of the glove.

That has to be one of the nicest 1.5 cards I've ever seen.

Can't beat getting a 55 Mays for $30 shipping, so think you done good, Doug.

It sure looks like someone wrote the number 8 in the glove on the upper left of the back of the card.

Nam ... looking under a 15x loupe, I believe that was printed in the card. Looks like a "button" that some gloves used to have.

Yeah, can you believe that? HOWEVER, even if I saw the back I still would have bought it at that price. I think it's a GREAT looking card for the price. Here was the description:

This card has excellent centering, see scans. Card has edge damage top edge otherwise a nice card. Card has excellent color and gloss. Corners show some wear with light touches. Back surface is clean with no stains.

I tell the seller that I am keeping the card because I like it. HOWEVER, I asked him how he could state that the reverse was clean? He never answered my question. Here was his response, which, OF COURSE, never answered my question about the reverse:

Sorry your not happy with the condition of the card. It was graded by PSA at 1.5 which is fair to good. I don't try to defend PSA grading but if your not happy please return and I will give you a refund for your purchase price.

    ANSWER THE QUESTION NEXT TIME!!!!!

    lol typical.

I'd email him again and say I do not disagree with the grade, nor did I ask you to defend anyone.

I simply asked how could you make the claim that the back was clean? Did you simply make a mistake or

    are you Full of sheet?

    But that's just me.

Well, he admitted to making a mistake ... I can accept that. His response was as follows:
Sorry is missed the details on the back. I list several cards each day and it appears I made a error. Once again I'm sorry if you were misled. I stand behind all sales with close to 20,000 positive feedbacks I don't want unhappy customers. Jon
