picked up some neat Silver bars today

Went to the local B&M and after looking through a tray of walkers asked to see any unusual Silver bars or rounds.
He brought out a big box filled with stuff so I rummaged around for a bit, first I pulled out 4-1/4 oz. prospectors along with a 1/2 oz prospector and a 1 oz. Prospector from 1982 still in the origuinal cellophane. I bought all these for $20 an oz.
Next I found an interesting 10 oz. old poured bar that said JMC in a rectangle on top a maple leaf in the middle with 999+ on the left and 10 oz. on the right I paid spot for this at $19 an oz. Possibly an old poured Johnson Matthey bar??
The last items I purchased were 2-5 oz. bars that said Republic National Bank Of New York on the front and 8 scattered shields with RNB inside them with the JM symbol on the lower left serial numbers- 010417 and 010406 these were still in the original plastic wrap holders and I payed $20 an oz. for them.
I also picked up a 1 oz. bar that said Jelenko Dental Health Products .999 fine silver one ounce troy on the front with nothing on the back I paid $19.50 for it.

All nice bars. I've owned each myself. The 10 oz is indeed a Johnson Matthey Canada bar. About a year ago I watched one of these sell for $450. That was a fluke, however they do tend to sell quite nicely on ebay. Jelenko bar is a nice one worth around $25, Of course the Fractional Prospectors carry a decent premium. I sold a 1/4 oz Saturday for $17 on eBay. The RNB bars are decent and will sometimes bring a premium but normally sell less than the "normal" JM bar design.

    The JMC bars come in 3, 4, 5, 7 & 10 oz

    The RNB bars come in 1, 5, 10 & I believe 100 oz.

Hey thanks for the info, the one bar that really piqued my interest was the old poured JMC bar as i figured with the maple leaf it had to be a Johnson Matthey bar. Do you know how old the JMC poured 10 oz. bar is or what time frame they were made in???

So what do the 3,4,5 and 7 oz. JMC bars usually bring on e-bay and are they more rare than the 10 oz. JMC bars???

I do not know any facts on the dates of the JMC bars. That being said I was told by a hard core collector of them that they are from the 40's-50's. He also stated there are a few different varieties in the stamps which had something to do with the year they were poured. Again, I cannot confirm any of this, Its all hearsay. I do know for a fact many of these bar exist without the maple leaf.

    3oz--$60-$75
    4oz--$80-$100
    5oz--$100-$125
    7oz--$140-$200
    10oz--$180-$240

These were the normal trading ranges on these ingots when I paid close attn to them back when silver was around $12-$14oz. I watched about 70-80 of these bars sell and I myself sold 20 or so. I haven't made a point of keeping an eye on them lately as I'm trying to steer clear of that type of stuff but when I see one I throw it on my watch list. They seem to be trading around the same range with silver around $18/oz. Of course there is the occasional bar that skyrockets due to bidiots and lack of supply on eBay. Seems one month there will be 10 diff bars listed and then none for 4-5 months. The first one to appear during that time normally sells very high and then a pile of them will surface thinking they are going to get that price also. Once every few months an entire set will appear with a display case that the bars must have been issued with b/c I've seen many of them with this case.

Agblox, I believe the JMC without the maple leaf may be older than the one with the maple leaf.

I have owned versions with and without the maple leaf, the one without the maple leaf is rarer. I had a 10 oz JMC with a maple leaf and one with the maple leaf and I don't think I have seen another 10 oz one without the maple leaf but don't take my word because I don't check ebay or keep up with them anymore as I might be tempted to collect again lol.

Good pickups and for a good price.

So you have owned 2 different varieties interesting. What did you get for the non maple leaf one vs. the maple leaf one???
  • He also had an older looking block shaped recangular bar that said wall street with a building with pillars on it, also had .999 and 10 oz. on it. Any thoughts???

There are so many types and varieties of silver bars............I don't see how anyone can reconcile that with the OCD that comes with the territory.image

Yeah but it sure is fun collecting oddball Silver bars of all shapes and sizes.image
  • Pardon the question - but how can someone tell real silver if there is no stamp (such as with a coin) ?

Is there a way to "test" the metal ?

    Thanks for indulging a novice.

    cheers
