A 1926-S Peace Dollar was one of two coins I received from my grandparents when I was about 10 years old that started me in this hobby (the other was an 1878-CC Morgan). Nice sentimental connection.

Yes, we know nothing about why the alteration was made.
The central portion of each half of the motto appears to have weakened on the master die ( is there a term for this? basining? ) as it was used...
Is it coincidence or by the engraver's design that what needed strengthening, or was chosen for strengthening, was GOD and V (we presume, for Victory)
Good stuff!
(by the way, this is real and natural rainbow toning on a peace, or I'm a monkey's uncle)
In COD we trust? does this mean cod the fish, and we trust it's good (not much worse to eat than bad fish)
or is it COD meaning Cash On Demand? You can trust me us to pay you, just ship the goods first on approval

I have a completed Peace Dollar set in Dansco - not common knowledge for me, thank you for posting.
