The following might be of interest to collectors of Peace dollars. 1926 produced one of the more interesting and enigmatic variations within the silver dollar series.

RWB, I love your historical knowledge of the Peace Dollar. I will be searching for 1926 Peace Dollars now!!!
  • I had Lange teaching my class in US Type Coins at the Summer Seminar in 2008. He mentioned this design when speaking on Peace Dollars. I hadn't known about it previously.

    Very interesting...thanks for the information.

A 1926-S Peace Dollar was one of two coins I received from my grandparents when I was about 10 years old that started me in this hobby (the other was an 1878-CC Morgan). Nice sentimental connection.

I remember Dave Lange's theory, but could never decide if the change was significant or not.

It is interesting that "GOD" is bolder in some cases but the political import of the variety looks to be pure speculation. It is interesting speculation but speculation all the same.

    Nice coins, Lance!

Yes, we know nothing about why the alteration was made.

It's interesting in that 1926 was shortly after the famous Scopes "Monkey Trial" regarding the teaching of evolution in school, and appeals were still underway at the time. Probably not relevant, but as these are all speculation, you never know.

Notice that the V in TRVST is also strengthened, as shown well in lkeigwin's excellent examples and pictures.

The central portion of each half of the motto appears to have weakened on the master die ( is there a term for this? basining? ) as it was used...
Is it coincidence or by the engraver's design that what needed strengthening, or was chosen for strengthening, was GOD and V (we presume, for Victory)

    Good stuff!

In COD we trust? does this mean cod the fish, and we trust it's good (not much worse to eat than bad fish)
or is it COD meaning Cash On Demand? You can trust me us to pay you, just ship the goods first on approval image

For 1926 the motto should be the same for all.
