OK- I'm a bit stupid, but

since when is it legal to charge a tax on a membership to a club- such as PCGS?
I decided to renew my long lost subscription (silver) and was charged $3.32 in tax? I do not live in California, and NEVER heard of anyone charging a tax to join a "club".
Can anyone show me where in the hell this is acceptable?
I know I had never paid a tax on previous applications, here or ATS.
Smoeone enlighten me on this one..

I do not live in california, therefore no tax may be applied to a membership, this is not a purchase from KMart!
and did not know that PCGS has a recipriocal agreement with the State of Texas!

Usually a company collecting tax in your state has an outlet in your state. I know heritage now collects tax in CA. PCGS would be sending the tax money to TX and I"m sure they are trying to follow TX law...it is not fun for the seller to comply with sales tax laws. --Jerry
From wikipedia, on California sales tax:
"In grocery stores, unprepared food items are not taxed but vitamins and all other items are. Ready-to-eat hot foods, whether sold by supermarkets or other vendors, are taxed. Restaurant bills are taxed. As an exception, hot beverages and bakery items are tax-exempt if and only if they are for take-out and are not sold with any other hot food. If consumed on the seller's premises, such items are taxed like restaurant meals. All other food is exempt from sales tax.
Also excluded are food animals (livestock), food plants and seeds, fertilizer used to grow food, prescription drugs and certain medical supplies, energy utilities, certain alternative energy devices and supplies, art for display by public agencies, and veterans' pins. There are many specific exemptions for various veterans', non-profit, educational, religious, and youth organizations. Sale of items to certain out-of-state or national entities (mostly transportation companies) is exempt, as are some goods sold while in transit through California to a foreign destination.
Occasional or one-time sales not part of a regular business are exempt, except that sales of three or more non-food animals (puppies, kittens, etc.) per year are taxed..."
What a crock of nonsense.
I don't know whether PCGS is right or wrong but if I had to guess I'd bet they are doing the correct thing.

But Heritage has an office in Cali, so that would be acceptable.
This is a membership to join the CU, ya know- to do submissions, look at pop reports and all that jazz.
smoething is not right in Newport. I'll just claim PCGS on my tax report at the end of the year I guess!

That is not true in all states.
"Some services are also subject to sales tax in Mississippi, as listed in Section 27-65-23 of the Mississippi Code. Examples of taxable services include software sales and service, repairs of tangible personal property, and renting or leasing tangible personal property."

My point is that I think you should be calling Austin rather than Newport....let us know what you find out. --Jerry
I wonder if somehow there is a reciprocal agreement in effect _AND_ Texas laws are different than California. Or maybe this is a new thing recently?
California is getting very 'taxy' and perhaps it is spreading.

They don't classify it as a service such as grading coins.
TX and CA are charged sales taxes on items.

Ray- your usage of the english language has me in a fervor. I have never seen the term ' a lot stupid ' used in such context.
I'm now confused as to what a "nexus" is?
I belong to 9 organizations of which 3 are based in Texas and pay a membership to each one, and not one has a tax added to it, and no they are not a 5c organization (non profit).
So I need to enlighten my tax man of another membership that I will be allowed to write off this year.
I wonder if I will be taxed on sending in submissions to them in California!
Maybe, just maybe I can send my submissions to the employees here in Texas and cut down the delivery time it takes to get them back!!
That's the ticket!!!!
If we have to pay taxes because you have an office here It should be doing some work for us!
<< <i>So where is this office in Texas? Can we drop off and pickup there? If not, why not?
