My gold coin collection (so far)

Since I'm thinking about golden crispy fried turkey today, I'd thought I'd post my current gold coin collection. I was chasing gold type earlier this decade when gold was around $350 to $400 an ounce. Hindsight says I should have chased the $20's some more, but I'm thankful for what I have. I basically wanted at least one of each denomination, just didn't get a $3 gold piece - yet. Maybe one day I'll see one I like.

Thanks for all the compliments! There are several coins that I need to retake - my photography skills weren't that well developed (pun intended) when I got some of the coins. The 1889 $2 1/2 piece is the most recent purchase and photo, managed to get that scarce date at no premium at all. No Stellas as far as I can see, probably have to be content with stock photos instead. I remember getting the 1854 and 1880 for not too much over melt back in the day, plus I like the fact that the 1880 is a bit scarcer too. I'm not really sure how much this collection will grow, especially with the current gold prices. Time will tell...

You've done well there. A collection such as this will always have a lasting value. Congrats on the 1850 Gold Dollar, thats a scarce date and in a nice grade. Now, you need a type 2 Gold Dollar also, to complete your type set there!


(Not to take anything away from your presentation, but if you download Photoscape, you can rid the coins of their slabs and present them against a black background)

Not only is collecting fun, but it also positions the guy doing it (even if not the intent). Just recently a man said to me : "I like to consider myself a human doing much more than a human being".
From that perspective, you're "doing" great with your collecting, and I'm being straight up.

A sort of interesting story about the 11-S $5 gold piece. Got that on an Ebay auction years ago for a good price, took a chance on it since it was in a PCI gold MS-62 holder. The coin did look nice, so I thought I'd take a chance. Eventually crossed it to a PCGS MS-62 holder, and it appears that is a scarcer date in that condition than I thought.

If you'd like a $3 gold you could sell one of your nice common date ms64 Saints on ebay and pick up a nice $3 thru Heritage.I used this strategy and the current craze for $20 gold to upgrade my collection
