I really dislike things on the edge of a coin. Really have a hard time seeing them when they are in a holder. Stuff like that belongs on the obverse/reverse.

If the date was on the obverse or reverse, I would like it. Having the date on the edges is, in my not-so humble opinion, incredibly stupid.

I used to but am getting very neutral about it anymore. Way too many stars.........

I do like the variations in edge lettering styles on the earlier coins though.
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

No, it is poorly done. Compare it to some old German silver coins. Cheers, RickO

Nope. But I do like the feel of reeded edges.

The return to lettered edges is the only thing that I DO like about the damn things.
Just because I'm old doesn't mean I don't love to look at a pretty bust.

I totally agree. They just look too much like Chuck E Cheese tokens.

I like when the dollar coin is really big and the edge lettering says, "hundred cents one dollar or unit"

  • To be honest, I prefer the ones without the edge lettering..........image

I don't like them in a flip, they look better after a dip
I don't like them in plastic, the view becomes much less drastic.
I don't like them in a book, I don't like the very look.
They don't fit in with normal spam, so I don't like them , Sam I am

I think it's one of the worst designs ever foisted on numistmatics.

Not really. It becomes a pain to read on circulated coins when the copper edge turns black.

    It makes interesting varieties....BUT

I would prefer the dates on the obverses.

  • Edge lettering on our coinage is a novel idea and a revival of old ideas.Unfortunately the metal of our coinage today is too hard to edge letter and fails to be legible and deep enough to be signifigant to be appreciated.I personally don't like the date ..ON..the edge.If the mint were a bit more serious about edge lettering it would be more dramatic..and not so dull...!!!

Although I like the concept of edge lettering (I'm also a bust half fan), the implementation for our small dollars really is poor.

They took important information and made it nearly impossible to see for anyone of average or less vision. Dates, mintmarks and the like should not be relegated to the edge. I'd also like to see the font used on the edge improved (larger, bolder, better font style).

No has lead to the fostering of the idea that poor quality workmanship makes a rare and valuable coin.
And that some body really cares whether the lettering is up or down when the coin is heads or tails.

I dislike the date and mintmark being on the edge.

Bad for collectors and therefore, bad for the hobby.

I firmly believe in numismatics as the world's greatest hobby, but recognize that this is a luxury and without collectors, we can all spend/melt our collections/inventories.

Putting the date and mintmark on the edge is one of the Mint's worst ideas in recent memory. I like the idea of a lettered edge, but for things like the motto, and not the date/mm. People with vision problems can't see them, plus most coin albums, folders and aftermarket holders for these obscure the edge lettering and thus the date/mm cannot be seen. Bad idea.

Need thicker coins for edge lettering. The presidential dollars are horrible. The edge lettering is poorly incused. The portraits are cartoonish. The alloy and overall quality is ugly.

Not for the date and mintmark. It's the perfect place for EPU and IGWT.

A lot of replies here are how it could be done better, not an answer to the question.

I don't worry or even form an opinion on anything out of my control unless it really bugs me or really makes my day better.

    So I'm fine.

  • No, but it is much more tolerable on a dollar size coin and when it doesn't contain critical information like dare and mint.

bad idea, when in rolls you dont know if its a P or D, plus they have messed so many up

I have no issue with a motto on edge, and agree with the premise of having more space for artistic designs -- BUT -- the date's gotta be on a side to show in the coin albums.

For collector's sake...!! (would you have collected wheats if the date was on the edge?)

Not with pertinent info. Date and IGWT should be on the obv/rev only.

i would have to agree with this !!!!

look at the middle dollar, i got this circulated dollar at a amusement park this year that uses them all around the park
the edge is almost worn smooth
i could barely see the " 2009 P " and i knew where it was and knew what to look for. Imagine these if they circulate - i bet they would be considered dateless like alot of buffalo nickels

don't really like the incused lettering as it fills up with dirt or isn't stamped in deep enough in the first place.

I really do like raised edge lettering though like on the $20 Saint or the raised stars on the edge of the $10 Indian.

But in any event keep the date and mintmark off the edge!!!
