Any idea what the percentages are on the 1988 Topps Big ABCD letter variations? I went through 25 Cal Ripken Jr.'s I have and there were only 2 B*'s. The rest were A*'s.

My Ripken's were about 50/50. >>
I guess there is non-glossy versions out there too? I saw a listing on eBay and the guy states he has a few Series 3 cards without gloss.

There are. I remember pulling them semi-regularly from series 1 boxes. Considered a printing flaw but pretty cool nonetheless.
wax pack - from wax case - purchased at Sam's club
I collect Seattle Pilots autographs, 1969 Topps autographs, Signed Mickey Mantle Home Run History cards and have a JC Martin collection (he was my college Baseball coach) Doug
Another of my favorite variations to hunt down. I'm interested to hear from others if they find any other "tilted number" cards in this set.
As an aside, I have been looking for the Robin Ventura #263 in the 1990-91 type, the 1990 type for years now. If anyone comes across one and wants to trade or sell, send me a PM. I accidentally stepped on the lone copy of the 1990 type that I had (yeah, I know...).
Really enjoy your blog. Thanks! I actually also enjoy going through my stacks of old cards and trying to see if I have any errors/variations. Thanks! You've given me a reason to enjoy 1988 Topps again.

1. It's a printing flaw error. In fact, it's the same type of thing that happened to the NNOF Frank Thomas: an obstruction in the black ink.
2. It's definitely rare. It may be the only one or one of just a few that were affected. No way of knowing until you've shopped it around to various sites for feedback.
3. PSA will either slab it and use the flaw to lower your grade or refuse to slab it because it's confusing to the grader (aka: not cataloged).
Awesome find. This is the type of thing that I look for when breaking all Topps junk wax.
I stumbled across 1 buried in the All Time finest Manny Ramirez Master Set. Link
Scroll down to the 92 Bowman #676 Foil RC. The owner was nice enough to put them side by side and list what you need to look for. I have no idea of the rarity but considdering it's a RC of a future HOFer I'm going to go out on a limb and say to look out for this one.
All the 1992 Foil non-"sp" cards come in 2 different cropping variations.
The 1992 foil sheets had 1 of each cropping variety per sheet and those players who only appeared once per sheet are what used to be cataloged as SPs. In other words, both versions are printed in equal numbers.
That's a great story! Well, except for the $20 part, it's definitely much rarer than that. What kind of packaging was it in?
I sold the only copy I had ever seen (found it in an ERR/COR pair on ebay a few years ago) as part of a large lot of Topps variations.
wow eight years later this thread comes up....
I bought a case of wax from Sam's club that only one yellow version was pulled
The $20 part worked well for me at the time. I believe the table fee was $30 so I was almost even within the hour

<< <i>Was there some variations in the holograms on one of the early 90s upper deck issues? >>
Yes there are. One of my next blogs will be a breakdown on these.
Basically 1991 Upper Deck baseball can be found with 4 different holograms on back.

The one I own is like the one on the right.

Hope that makes sense.

Card 792 from the 1988 Topps set has the players last name and some vital stats missing.
Of 10 or so examples of this card I have just the one. Printing error or variation I'll let you decide.
