Wondering what everyone is best at grading. Mine is definitely peace dollars.

    Lincoln cents.

On the flip side I can't grade Mercury dimes or Walking Liberty halves. The ANA guide and TPG's don't seem to agree on these either.

Still learning about all US coins.

Big problems with US gold and Peace dollars.

I try to stay away from Copper (both US and Canadian).

I have a great track record submitting raw coins to ICCS with Canadian coins of KGV, KGVI and QEII years (1911 to 1964; especially dimes, quarters and halves).
"Gold is money, and nothing else" (JP Morgan, 1912)

Capped Bust Halves seem to be my strong suit, when compared to how the TPG's grade.
Bust Quarters aren't too bad, but the TPG's are too inconsistent on this series for me to guage a precise grade.
Bust Dimes - I seem to have my own standards when compared to the TPG's!
Bust Half-Dimes are also rather simple to grade.

I could go on, but the what I stated above is my focus and what I look at the most

Walkers and commems. Kind of know what both PCGS and NGC are looking for on these series. It helps that this is virtually all I collect. MJ

There is a difference between grading a coin and predicting what a TPG will label it. If you are referring to the latter then I don't have a clue--I never tried to learn. If you are referring to the former then my answer can be seen to the left of this post.

However, anyone can grade any coin--at least to his own standards. Even my 7yo granddaughter can grade coins. Her grading standards consist of "pretty", "not so pretty", and "ugly".

Edit because I don't know my "right" from my "left"
Just because I'm old doesn't mean I don't love to look at a pretty bust.

i am talking about coins that you have seen so many in certain grades you can get a feel of what they would grade at. All MS65 peace dollars i have graded MS66 have upgrade to MS66 image

    Morgans.
But I'm better when I see coins in person versus from photos.

edited to clarify: Morgans are my best series at predicting how PCGS will grade them.
    When in doubt, don't.

They've got to be big for my old eyes to even see them! So, I'll go with
    Morgans.

Capped Bust halves in circulated grades.I have submitted 20 raw to Pcgs without a single bodybag or genuine holder.
    Trade $'s
  • I think the early circulated stuff is the easiest to grade. Also seems the lower the grade the easier to grade it is. Judging between MS 64 to 65 seems very hard to me. I also can't stand grading morgan dollars. There are also so many of them it make my head hurt.

I'd have to say quarter and half eagles from 1834-1929. Never bothered with pre 1834 due to how expensive even low grade examples are.

Your comment about the ANA guide makes sense since the TPG's don't use ANA standards for grading.

I don't buy them, but I'd say I am best at grading modern US Mint Proof Silver Eagles.
  • ctf_error_coinsctf_error_coins Posts: 15,433 ✭✭✭✭✭
Error coins, I don't so much care about the grade but I do care about the error. Of course the higher the grade the better , but that is secondary.

I can identify most errors and can spot most (non counterfeit) fakes in a second.

Of course there is still a great deal to learn on the subject, but I do feel that i have a very good handle on it.

Good for you...CBHs are one of the toughest series to grade.

Barber Halves, I'm decent on dimes but I think I'm really darned good at the Halves. My submissions agree with my grades over 85% of the time.

    Colonials.

I suck at grading them...but I suck worse at grading everything else.
  • Broke two MS-64 Carver/Washington's out and sent them in and they both came back 65.

Jefferson nickels. But here's something to think about. The TGSs tell us the steps (or any other designation) need to be perfect but for what the rest of the coin looks like, you're (pretty much) on your own. image

    I would say Seated Dimes
I seldom check PM's but do check emails often jason@seated.org

Buying top quality Seated Dimes in Gem BU and Proof.

Buying great coins - monster eye appeal only.
  • I think I'm fairly good at Lincolns and Buffalos. Morgans seem to come easy to me though.
  • I can't grade a thing. When I send something to PCGS, it's all luck.
