how to rinse copper coins daubed with acetone

jesbrokenjesbroken Posts: 10,615 ✭✭✭✭✭
After daubing a copper coin with acetone to clean it of debris, how should one rinse the acetone from the surface of the coin? by soaking in water, under a faucet, soaking in olive oil, using distilled water or how exactly and for how long to insure the acetone is gone? I've read here and on coppercoins.com about using acetone, but not really the specifics.
Thanks
Jim

    Acetone evaporates.

Acetone is water soluble. Thus water makes a good rinse for it.

Rinsing under a running stream of distilled water is best.

Letting Acetone evaporate can redeposit whatever the acetone dissolved in the first place.

That's why you rinse it multiple times. If the acetone dissolves 95% of what's on the coin, the first rinse leaves 5%, second rinse leaves 0.25%, third rinse leaves 0.0125%, and so on.

Besides, tap water has salts in it, and distilled may even have some antifungal or antibacterial agents in it.

I have never bothered with a water rinse...

I have soaked in acetone for days AND have only dipped a Qtip and lightly rubbed. If I have a dirty Qtip, I repeat until no more stuff is showing up. Never use acetone on a copper proof. But if you want to wash it with water, go ahead.

    He can't ask FEC.

I wonder where well water would work into the mix - probably between tap and distilled -- or maybe better than both.

Rinse with a flush of distilled water through a hypodermic needle (minus the needle). Then air dry with hair dryer. Then put back in your pocket. Wait 10 years and do it all over again.

Acetone evaporates. If you use a high grade acetone, that should be the final thing you do. Rinsing with any kind of water will only leave deposits of some sort. To maximize the multiple rinses while minimizing the amount of acetone, I use a squirt bottle like these which are available from laboratory supply stores.

Rinse with flowing DI water, followed by flowing alcohol.. then gently blow dry, from a distance of 18 inches... Cheers, RickO
