Top ten reasons to upgrade a collection ?

PTVETTERPTVETTER Posts: 6,028 ✭✭✭✭✭
I was woundering what would the top ten reasons to upgrade a collection would be, if the PCGS board members could create the list.

This could be interesting since there are so many different view points here!

Do you write for David Letterman? image

Not sure where this would go on the list, but how about:

You prefer nicer coins to lesser ones.

In my shop I try to educate the public. I do this by showing them a good V nickle and one in a PCGS MS64 holder. I them ask them which would you like the show someone as the owner.

At that point, a light bulb goes on.

Quality counts, but also cost, where is the balance?

Their is really only one reason. The human uge to participate

in a hunt. There is always a nicer coin out there then the one

you own and you want that better coin even if it is the same

technical grade. Of course, we must exclude the super dooper rarities

where a better coin may not even exist. Man is a hunter by nature,

unfortunately, fuzzy bears are what he often hunts.

Case in point, this is why male creatures constantly change TV channels, looking

for a better program, to the consternation of Mrs Bear.

You've determined that your wife couldn't possibly want any more shoes.

Tiffany's is having a sale and you need to spend the money you saved.

You think it's a good place to hide assets.

You've outgrown coins with holes in them.

    Opportunity beckons.

I don't know that this would be a top ten reason, but I would imagine that if you could move up the PCGS registry to a point where it would be considered high profile and you could get the pedigree on the slab insert then you might be able to make more noise and potentially generate more interest (read: cash) upon sale.

I'd upgrade for eye appeal these days.

I think Letterman is from Indiana?

I like a set to be somewhat uniform in the grades I have in it.

Unfortunately, I have only achieved this on a couple of series but it doesn't hurt to dream.

One might want to upgrade for the sake of more cohesiveness. For example,if one's set of Lincolns are, for the most part,good/very good condition but a few are slickers, one might want to replace the slickers with at least fully good coins.

Considerations of a collection's cohesiveness should outweigh considerations of any one coin's eye appeal,in my opinion. For example,a brilliant uncirculated 1909 S V.D.B. would be out of place in a collection of good/very good Lincolns. The S V.D.B. would be the offending element here because it's presence among the other coins pretty much destroys the collection's cohesiveness.

The big picture is made up of a number of little pictures,in other words. For the example above, the solution for the Lincoln collector would be to either upgrade all the Lincolns other than the SVDB or sell the brilliant SVDB and then buy a lesser grade example that is more in harmony with his set.

Considerations of my collection's cohesiveness are a real good reason for me to possibly want to upgrade or downgrade,as the case may be.It's entirely possible that a downgrade,in some cases, can actually result in an upgrade in cohesiveness.

There a few reasons why I buy upgrades.

The first reason is that I'm not happy with the coin in a slot and want to upgrade it.

The second reason applied when I was a dealer. If I saw a replacement coin that really liked, and I KNEW that I could sell the coin that was in my collection easily, AND not have to investment that much more money on the exchange I did it.

The third reason is if I see a coin that really outstanding for its kind, and I can afford the upgrade, I did it.

The fourth reason was a special case. Years ago I sold a very attractive Mint State 1795 large cent when I was putting together the cash to buy a Gobrecht dollar. I kicked myself for years for doing that. Finally I happened upon a 1795 large cent that was even nicer than the coin I had sold so … I took the plunge and stopping kicking myself for the past mistake.

One reason that never applies is upgrading for registry points. I'm not a big enough fish to ever be the head of the school, so going for registry points is not a reason for me to upgrade. I'm into completeness and eye appeal.

I win the powerball and coin collecting would become too pedestrian for me. I'm into masters faster than you can say Leonardo da Vinci.

Because you can only contain the itch for so long.

Because gold is up and you need more.

    Just because.
  • Because you find a 66 at a rip price and have a buyer for your 64 at a price higher than the 66 is being offered.
