I'm guessing those 4-5 obverse light spots kept it from a higher grade. The price seems in the ballpark, but if I were a potential buyer it would concern me that most of the pix are sort in the shadows and not lit up real well or real close up images. image
I never thought that growing old would happen so fast.

The pics are horrible. Too tough to call.

Likely dipped and retoned, but an attractive looking piece in my opinion.

  • I would agree with paul,
Dipped, cleaned possibly but imrossible to tell from those images, Retoned in an album I would assume. Stuck into a ngc holder but from the images I could be completly off.

Need better pictures, but the toning suggests long album residence. Remember though, it can be artificially duplicated. Cheers, RickO

I would venture to suggest that it has certainly been dipped at least once and likely more and that it has subsequently acquire secondary toning. However, the MS61 grade would infer to me that this is a coin with some type of wear pattern or that it has highly muted luster or a significant number of hairlines.

  • I don't know how fair the price is (not my area) but from what I can see in the bad images I think it would be an attrative coin in hand.....classic album retoning....image

Might be worth $1200, but that is a big "might".
I collect Capped Bust series by variety in PCGS AU/MS grades.

As has been said, 61 is really close to the lowest MS grade and usually given to a less than prime piece. This one sure looks better than that lower end of the spectrum by the pics so as Tom has stated, there is probably more to this than meets the eye from the pics provided.
Also, this toning pattern is usually seen after a coin has been dipped and allowed to retone.
Some coins are just plain "Interesting"
  • Seems to me you could do better, or at least deal with someone known here for that kind of money. Evan Gale has a couple of nice 61's, one is around $1500 and you know what you're getting. I agree, old cleaning and retoned it looks ok but pricey I think.
