A potential looming USPS headache...has this happened to anyone?

I sold a coin from my BST thread to another forum member... A week ago tomorrow, I mailed the coin (insured, thankfully) from Alabama to a New England state, and here we are on day #6 with the tracking showing that the package was processed through some place way down near Miami, Florida. Has anything like this happened to anyone here? I am not quite in full blown panic mode yet, but I sort of see an insurance claim looming on the horizon.

What's that gotta' do with the price of corn in Mongolia?
Lots of folks are doing it at the same time. Packages flying through the air, mostly into the correct bin.
Sometimes one gets into the wrong bin and goes on a little trip somewhere else.
The sorting process is so fast that there is no time to correct the mistake. In fact, I bet if you were to walk over to that 'wrong' bin to retrieve the package, you would interfere with 20 other packages flying through the air and cause more trouble.
The package is still in the system and, if it's addressed properly, it will eventually get to the right spot.
It means things could be backed up. It will prolly show up tomorrow.
Relax, I wouldn't worry.................Yet.

<< <i>There is a room in the sorting facility where folks read the zip code on the package and are supposed to toss the package into the right bin.

I think Adam really hit the nail on the head here---I wouldn't worry for now...

A challenge with shipping and mailing is how to get the package to the destination. It is generally unlikely there is a plane, truck, or ship going directly from one point to another. Many shippers/air freight companies sort the packages at a particular sorting facility and that is what it looks like is done here.
If you ever get a chance to see the Fedex sorting in Memphis, it is amazing. My understanding is that out of town shipments are flown to Memphis and sorted to be loaded on a plane to near the destination. It is amazing how they sort so many packages in a short window, especially for overnight deliveries.
notoriously bad at understanding language whether written or spoken. Even-
tually the error will be spotted and the package redirected. It will probably have
a little white piece of tape with the zip code expressed in bar code when it gets to
where it's going.

What he said.
I know it's not the popular opinion, but I think you'd be better served by not bothering with checking the "tracking" info on the USPS website, since the overwhelming majority of packages get delivered just fine.

A little paranoid, no? These things happen all the time. In all the years I've been shipping packages using the USPS, I have yet to have a package get lost and have to file a claim. Sure, every now and then something gets misdirected, but when it is all said and done, it always gets there. I could not be happier with our USPS.
