Horse Crap! Its utilizing packaging that the USPS gives away for free. Absolutely no different than finding a box at the super market and using it to pack belongings in to move.
There is absolutely a big difference between the two... why not just go to the super market to get your mailing boxes or don't wrap the PO's boxes in brown paper and mail them with 1st class postage...
The boxes from the USPS are not free, they are paid for by using them for the purpose of Priority Mail Service.
Terms of Agreement: I understand that Express Mail, Priority Mail, Global Express Guaranteed, Express Mail International and Priority Mail International packaging is the property of the United States Postal Service and is provided solely for sending Express Mail, Priority Mail, Global Express Guaranteed, Express Mail International and Priority Mail International. Misuse may be a violation of federal law. I Decline I Agree
Decline and you won't get the boxes.... Agree and get the boxes shipped to your home free of charge. Then to use them for first class mail is considered what - honest and ethical?
I'm quite sure if everyone abused the system in such a manner, this convenient service would no longer be offered.
Well I asked him and as expected he said that your not supposed to. But he also said that he cannot open a package if he suspects a PM box was used however if the package gets damaged and the box is revealed then they will add a postage due for the recipient.
They no longer return any mail for lack of postage unless its right after a postal rate change. They always bill the recipient.

I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.
There is no such thing as free boxes. The USPS does not give them away. It provides them for use with Priority Mail. The cost of the box is included in the postage. Using them for other mail functions doesn't really work for them. --Jerry
<< <i>I want to know where everyone gets the cardboard flips that seal shut and hold the graded coins in for shipping. >>
They are available from coin supply houses. I use small padded envelopes instead because they cost the same, have more padding, I already have them in stock, and it's one less think I have to reorder. --Jerry
edit: also I don't care for the glue on the surface of the slab and the padded envelopes are easier to open. >>
Same here, "0" "000" size bubble envelopes $.20 a piece and I only have to reorder 2 sizes. Single slab in small bubble then put in larger bubble. Just under 3 oz.s $1.96 for postage and material. Delivery confirmation depending on value.
Except they NEVER pack well or use packing peanuts OR bubble wrap. I get enough of that stuff from other packages I receive and just dump the packing peanuts into a big garbage bag each time I have some.
I do like the Priority Mail Small Flat Rate Box though, use that for most items.
And I crumple up pages from old Numismatic News issues to fill up extra space.
So i guess we all agree priority mail boxes cost the post office money, nothing is free! If you get caught using them the post office deserve some money out of it. Its not like taking a unwanted used box from the store or the garbage. Does the post office care? Beats me, but i bet they do.

When I go dumpster diving, I never know what sort of free shipping material I might find

You are missing the point. They are NOT FREE. They are to be used only with priority postage.
It has nothing to do with anything over 13oz gets charged priority. It has nothing to do with the grocery store giving away bags.
They are to be used only for priority mail, nothing else.
Not sure if you even know this but you can't even use a used priorty mail box as filling for a package.
If for some reason you get caught you or the recipient will be charged the priority rate.

I never said they could or would, I said and I was very precise "if they somehow find out....."
I then tried to be even clearer and said something like 'what happens if the box gets crushed and the clerk sees"
Listen, I never said you were unethical or a thief or whatever, I simply was trying to explain what the situation truly is.
And FWIW I and you for that matter were not arguing, but simply discussing. At least that is how I felt.
I think you were too.
