$6000 PCGS 1954-S Franklin in 2001 !

1954S PCGS MS66 FBL

Probably the finest piece from the roll auctioned off by Bowers & Ruddy some 20 years ago @ 20 large + juice.

Was made in a 66FBL holder by Steve Leber and sold in 2001 @ Heritage for over 6000.00

Those were the days of the mighty, mighty Franklins..........and the iron men that bought them imageimage

..... and your point is??? Cheers, RickO
  • today the date trades for $1200 bucks or so......... but this one -if it appeared today would command much more

How is a Price Guide going to be implemented that can reflect such variables ?
  • Do you own this 54 Frankie Paul? If so then image
  • the 54-S ?

sadly , no ................. It's possible Ronyahski is the owner

I saw 7 or 8 of them from the roll , freshly slabbed at Leber's table many years ago.

But at that time he wanted moon money for them

what's the mintage? what about the surviving population in the next grade down and other ms grades? can worn ones still be occasionally found in circulation?
(well, at least by roll searchers?)

and someone bought one for mid 4 figures? maybe the iron men were a little rusted on the brain?

It really kills me when collectors/dealers chase after modern low pop coins. Truly a waste of money.

Reminds me when (about 8 years ago) when QEII Canadian coins, specifically the years 1960 to 1964, started being submitted and getting a few high grades (ms65 heavy cameos). These were selling for 'moon money' and I didn't bite at all. Well you can go on Ebay now and pick up these same ICCS graded top quality coins for 1/4 of the price.

  • Wow Baley ...........

there was a time , a decade or so ago , when Franklins sold for mid 4 figures on a somewhat regular basis

Dont get me wrong, I love Franklins and have a complete set of MS and most of the proofs, along with many beautiful duplicates.... all of which together cost me a fraction of a thousand dollars. so what point are you making by your original thread post?

  • apparently my point is moot ;

a 6000$ 54-S Franklin that probably has no rival speaks for itself
  • I remember seeing about half the roll.. the best few from that roll (all had been individually wrapped in tissue) ...well, they were exquisite.

More than a couple were FBL, which always made me suspect that it was a put together roll. Maybe the best 20 cherried from a bag and lovingly wrapped in tissue? Although if your going to wrap up the best coins, why 20? They would not have fit in any roll storage device with all that tissue.

I wonder if QDB would recall what the 20 wrapped halves were stored in?

That looks to be a nice Frankie image

Beautiful rainbow toning, which I'm positive looks 100% better in hand than those heritage images. And the grade to boot.

But I'm sure if this coin was auctioned today It wouldn't sell for half that amount, but you never know on teletrade! Right Bushmaster image
