Is there an ideal ratio, and are you there?

WeissWeiss Posts: 9,941 ✭✭✭✭✭
of Ag to Au. Not historically. For you and your holdings.

I just did a thumbnail sketch and I'm at about 20 to 1. Roughly.

That feels about right to me, though I'm not entirely sure why.

Are you at your ideal ratio?

No, I mean do you own a set ratio of silver to gold, and do you believe there is a ratio, regardless of quantity, that is ideal for your portfolio?

For example, if you own 10 ounces of gold, do you think you should own 100 oz of silver? 1000 oz?

Personally I have been able to hold to the 100-1 ratio for myself.

Are you measuring by price or by weight?

Oz to Oz I think he means.

For me it's a 10 to 1 ratio, and I would like to decrease that even further.
Not by selling Silver but buying more gold.

It looks like Silver has the most to gain from a % point of view.
On the other hand it's far more volatile.

I tend to put it away and forget about it. I think gold is better for
    my lifestyle point of view.

Whenever I buy silver, it begins to feel like I'm light on gold. And conversely, whenever I buy gold, it begins to feel like I'm light on silver.

So, I just go ahead and buy platinum.image

Added: just teasing. Actually, I bought some gold on Friday.

  • 25 to 1 on average. It varies from 20-30 to 1. I like to swing trade some of the silver position during extreme moves up or down over the period of a year.

Presently 27 to 1 and buying both Ag and Au when funds allow. I am nearing my goal for silver and once I'm there I'll focus on gold till I get to 20 to 1.
  • Im presently at 16-1 and thats just how its turned out....not by design. Way back in the old days, the ratio was 15-1 for a very long time. I would guess that it will eventually return to that ratio since all the gold ever mined in history still exists in some form or another, but silver is constantly being used up. May be quite a few centuries before that happens though!

500:1 but might drop it down to 250:1 by buying more of the yellow stuff.

  • Never thought of it like that in ounces to ounces. 11 to 1 silver oz to gold oz. I tend to think about it in dollars and balance it that way. These ratios are not right or wrong for anyone IMO.
Gold takes so much less space.....

Gold does take up less space, but what if silver ever rises dramatically in price?

Anyway, silver for me is long term and I'm basing that on the fundamentals. Gold serves as an inflation/deflation-proof cash pile for me, sort of like a money market. I do not hold currency beyond a 1-3 month supply.
