<< <i>In that link article.....is that his hair flowing back behind his head? If so, I had NO idea it was that long haha - guess I haven't watched a Giants game in a long time as I would have noticed a pitcher with super long hair. >>
I don't think he's cut his hair since his rookie year in 07. It just gets longer and longer.

And by stupid things I mean speeding. Smoking pot? No big deal in my books.
I would rather hear that he was stoned and driving than drinking and driving but then it should be just driving
Regardless, he is the best pitcher right now in baseball.

should be legal. Cigarettes are far more addictive

He was hardly speeding. 14 over the limit? I see that every day. Heck, sometime's that's the flow of traffic.
The pot thing isn't going to effect the price of his cards, but it's still stupid.
Oh well. I like what Andrew Baggarly (one of the Giants beat writers) said "it’s not like this comes as a shock. Lincecum dresses like he’s a cross between Jimbo Jones from "The Simpsons" and Jay from "Clerks."

Wow. I missed that part in the story. That is nothing for sure.

Aint that the truth!
To think of all the stupid things we did in college with no money. Imagine if one of us was making a few mil a year. Damn....
<< <i>As much of a cheater as Roger Clemens >>
How did Lincecum cheat?
WTB: 2001 Leaf Rookies & Stars Longevity: Ryan Jensen #/25
<< <i>No one said he cheated. . . >>
Just stirring the "PED use is not cheating" pot?
And Clemens is a cheater. He cheated on his wife. I think that's far worse than steroids or weed.
WTB: 2001 Leaf Rookies & Stars Longevity: Ryan Jensen #/25
The thing that tickes me off more than the pot bust is that he's decided to enter a plea of "not guilty" in court. He's not even owning up to his mistake.
====================================================================================================
That is standard procedure. I did not read the article but assume it is his first court appearance for that charge?
NO judge would allow any other plea anyway.
He pleads NG, his lawyer then speaks with the DA and a deal is made.
It's just the way they do things.
Relax guys he isn't a ax murderer.
Steve
Or still do.
And if they did not and were able to get thru those years clean I applaud them.

Forgot about that. Guess Lincecum cheated only as much as McGwire then. Unless there is some tax return or school course I don't know about. As far as value judgement every use or abuse is different. Sometimes perfectly reasonable, other times absolutely horrible
Dangerous and illegal drug use in sports can only be considered cheating if the sport chooses to ban the substance. It is illogical and stupid to call those who used steroids from the pre-testing era cheaters, but not those who use other dangerous and illegal drugs, according to the government
Long haired, plays in norCal, lives in Washington, we should be shocked if we learned he never touched the stuff

Do you consider any act of breaking rules or law to be "cheating?"

A lot of times the label doesn't seem to fit correctly. Alluded to the idea earlier that breaking tax laws we would consider them a tax "cheat." Fraud and things like that certainly could be labeled as such
In sports, if drugs are banned by the sport, using them would be cheating. Despite using drugs, Lincecum wasn't cheating. If they aren't banned, I wouldn't consider them cheating. But some people do, usually for reasons they cannot intelligently express. And if they don't consider Lincecum to be in the same class they are a complete idiot

MLB actually does have marijuana listed as a banned drug. It's categorized under "Drugs of Abuse", along with cocaine and other recreational drugs.
However, MLB doesn't consider a player who uses a "drug of abuse" and a player who uses PEDs to be in the same class, as evidenced by the very different disciplinary actions they take for each.
Get bused for a "drug of abuse" and a player will get a slap on the wrist and have to participate in a mandatory "treatment" program for the first offense.
Get busted for steroids, and a player will be suspended for 50 games the first offense.

What disciplinary action did Major League Baseball take against steroids before 2003?

None. But after the all-time records fell and fans and bored politicians started to raise a stink, they do now.
I'm not the "kill all the juicers" guy.

Long haired hippie smoking weed seems like a perfect parallel to heavily muscled pro athlete using steroids
<< <i>So you agree it is accurate to say Lincecum is as much of a cheater as those guys >>
Then-Commissioner Fay Vincent officially "banned" steroid use in 1991, though there was no real testing and zero enforcement of the rule until recently. So, the rules have been in the books since before guys like Bonds, Clemens, etc, were suspected of using. With the recent hashing out of a comprehensive drug policy, "drugs" as a group have been split into different categories, with their own levels of punishment. Steroids and pot are not equal in the eyes of the current drug policy.

Dock Ellis threw a no-no while on LSD, so who knows, maybe there are some PED qualities to this crap!

It still seems like you agree completely that weed in 2009 was treated the same as steroids in the 1990s in the eyes of Major League Baseball drug policy. Otherwise they wouldn't have made the choice to have zero testing and zero enforcement

I agree that the official drug policy punished steroid and pot use the same, by doing nothing. However, similar punishment (or lack there of) does not imply equality of infraction.
Failing to pay a parking ticket and public intoxication can get you the same punishment in our courts. Does that mean that not paying a parking ticket and public intoxication are the same crime?
However, now we need to get back to the word "cheat". Lincecum and Clemens both violated the drug policies of their respective eras. If you want to call a violation of a rule to be "cheating", then I guess they both cheated the drug policy. However, then you get into intention. Is the "competitive edge" that one gets from steroids the same as what one gets from smoking dope? Is a guy who's smoking dope have the same intentions as the guy who's taking steroids?
It's ALL about intention.

<< <i> If you want to call a violation of a rule to be "cheating", then I guess they both cheated the drug policy >>
So far in this discussion no one else has said they cheated. Violation of a rule shouldn't always be called cheating, so saying neither cheated the drug policy is the best way to look at the situations

You started your entry into this thread with "As much of a cheater as Roger Clemens", obviously looking for this sort of discussion.
Clemens allegedly violated the drug policy by using steroids to enhance his abilities on the field. He allegedly did something illegal to intentionally alter the game for the benefit of he and his team. It's not far fetched to consider this violation to be "cheating."

To me, "cheating" isn't merely breaking the rules; it's breaking the rules with the intent of gaining an unfair competitive edge on the field. I don't think weed qualifies as "cheating" under that definition. Doesn't change the fact that it breaks the league policy and possibly the law, but that's separate from the "cheating" issue, IMO.
Juicing, on the other hand, is cheating.

I only know this because a friend of a friend of mine is friends with Lincecum and says that he smokes weed before every start. That's just hearsay though.
