ok, hilarious replies to earlier post....... priceless. no, wasn't escorted out by cops (or doctor), wasn't harrassed...... here's the scoop.
11 am enter small Amish grocery store, great loaf of Italian Bread (fresh made that morning) $1.79. Approach counter, with young Amish girl running the check out register. Place loaf on counter with 2 ea 1964 dimes. I explain the dimes are silver and valued at 12times face value. YES, you're correct she had never seen such dimes. Her expression was one of interest and of course had to go into back room to ask someone if she could accept as payment. Within 30 seconds she returned and said NO, would not accept for $1.20 each. NO one from the back room came out, thanked her and left.
4 pm visited local grocery (5 store chain) large store. Loaf of Italian bread $3.79. Placed 3 1964 dimes on counter. Same explanation. Teller looked at me like I was nuts, but she thought the dimes were cool! (not good for my ego) She called over the manager, he looked at the dimes and suggested I take them to the local B&M and return with dollars. I explained, the value of the dimes again, that I didn't have time to go to B&M. He looked again at the dimes again, thought I had a deal, but No sale. I've got my dimes and no bread.
Moral of story....... 2 dimes in hand is better than 1 loaf in the bag. (silver is up today!)

<< <i>Tough break... Maybe a garage sell should be your next attempt? >>
I would happily attend a garage sale on Mercs , providing i can pay in bread and pastries
Same here...very good plan to act on a hypothesis that is getting more exposure here, bartering PM for things we need. Brave, innovative, acted upon and good information gleaned. It may well be that the time is not right just yet but at some point it should work. Good on 'ya KUCH.
I think I got the short end of that deal as I don't have near as much hair as I did when I traded for the Mossberg.
There are still some people out there that will barter for PM's.
<< <i>I applaud the OP's experiment. I also suspect that the results of this would be MUCH different in 10 years or so. However, I sincerely hope im mistaken! >>
I'm not so sure. The majority of average folks have been so conditioned to the concept of money not containing PM's (especially silver) that they can't commend the value in it. Plus most don't know what the current PM prices are anyway. Cash4Gold pretty much proves that.
She works for a physician in LA who does various medical procedures for pain management and has wealthy patients fly in from all over the world.
thursday afternoon a patient arrives directly from LAX and had flown in that morning from Australia. The charge for the procedure that afternoon was about 4-thousand. the patient presents his AMEX card to pay.
AMEX is not accepted, Visa or mastercard or cash (yes insurance is accepted).
So the patient opens up his attache case on the counter... and inside is a stash of gold bars. My wife knows nothing about gold so couldnt provide any more details, but she said each gold bar was about the size of a cell phone.
the patient says to the doctor, can I pay you i gold?
No, says the doctor.
so the patient says, "I'll be right back."
about two hours later he returns and pays his 4k in cash. no more details available.

<< <i>Cellphone sized gold bars?! Sounds like kilo bars to me.
>>
One kilo of gold is worth what---about $35,000? How would the doctor give change for the $4000 bill if he accepts a gold bar? And what if these bars are fake?
