ok, going to store tomorrow with silver!

Well, it's time I discover if local grocery will take silver coins as payment. Going to buy a loaf of bread, will take in commen silver and say it is worth 12X face value. Bread = $1.20 then 2 ea mercury dimes = $1.20

They will take your coins but only take them at face value.
  • they will call in the Secret Service for suspicion of counterfeiting ... imageimageimage
Re: Slabbed coins - There are some coins that LIVE within clear plastic and wear their labels with pride... while there are others that HIDE behind scratched plastic and are simply dragged along by a label. Then there are those coins that simply hang out, naked and free image

Good Luck, KUCH. This is excellent research at the ground level but you might need to load up about $40 worth of groceries and throw a couple of SAE's on the counter. Can't wait for your next post!

Even better, buy a butt load of groceries, pay with a 1/2 oz AGE and hold your hand out for the hundreds of dollars in change.imageimage

1/2oz AGE has a $25 face value on the coin.

Kids today can't even make change.

I'd say 2 - mercury dimes will be a much safer route!

  • Like the predictions and suggestions. Now I'm even more curious/anxious to see how this plays out. New plan... first grocery stop will be a medium size store (5 stores in 2 counties) and we'll see what they do. Then I'll stop at small Amish Mom and Pop and Buggy store and see what they do. I should be able to post the results of tomorrow's commen silver trading/barter experiment around 3 pm CST.

  • I'll give you $1.20 for the two silver dimes now. Do you take PayPal? image

Why would the accept it for anything more than face value?

Take in a PCGS MS65 1914-d and see if they value it at more than a cent.

They're not a coin shop or a precious metals exchange.

You wont be making many sandwiches , they would accept them at face value leaving you a dollar short. If you expect them to be taken as legal tender then its face value. You cant expect a barter system to accomodate you.Why would they take your price of 12x if they are the recieving party its them that set the value , and they are going to say 1x , you can take that to the bank.
  • I think you might have some luck in the "small Amish Mom and Pop and Buggy store" but doubt you will get anywhere in the other store... Bring the camera and take a tic of the cashers face when you lay the Mercs on the counter...

not a chance they'll take it as 12X face.

    at best 1x face.
