Anyone have luck at schools/colleges?

Just wondering what kind of luck everyone has had searching around schools, both old or new?

I've had the opportunity to search around a few old schools and have found maybe a couple silver coins, some Indian cents and wheaties but nothing to really cover my time of hunting. At the new school yards I've had luck in finding a lot of current coinage. The best one was with woodchips as the base material. I probably found 20 quarters there in less than an hour. It's somewhat tougher to find items in the many loose gravel schoolyards but it is really easy to sift through to find your targets. (Actually I did find about ten Mercs at one older Catholic church/school side yard.)

I've searched a little around the old football field at the local high school and didn't find a lot. At the really old, turn of the century, college gymnasium you used to be able to find goodies but they've since built a new building there.

This summer I searched on the University of Missouri - Rolla campus for a few hours and found new coinage but nothing old. I think maybe they have brought in clean fill to cover up the old stuff. It's there but deep and I couldn't find it....plus the digging was hard--very tough root system.

If you are looking around any High School that has grass between the school and the parking lot you will find change. If you want to see where the kids cut across check the school out after a hard frost or a light snow. Where these tracks are is where the coins/rings will be. Check out where the marching band practices I've always had luck there too. Also find out where the kids play during the High School games. Check out the hill sides where people watch. In some of these spots it's like they just threw their money there.

Schools are very popular MD'ing sites. Why? Because a lot of coins and jewelry are lost during games, leisure time, crowd congregation etc. Many people hunt schools almost exclusively. Cheers, RickO
