Junk Wax heaven!!

I went to go check out a collection today which was hyped to be one of those "start your own store" collections. Nearly everything was from '87-'92, the worst years possible. Anyway, if anyone lives near Peoria IL, and is interested in this, let me know. The lady is wanting too much in my opinion, but she could probably be talked down, because she wants to get rid of it. Here are some pics.

Wow, that's alot of junk wax. Too bad it wasn't at least 10 years older. Could keep someone really busy for awhile though if it was cheap enough. Maybe another road trip for Bill. image

  • Curt,

What does she need for it, sounds like a fun road trip? Does it include everything in the pictures Ie: 3500 count boxes etc.

    Thanks,

She wanted 5k for everything, way too much, but I think she would come down quite a bit. I didn't even bother to negotiate as there is nothing that interested me. It was worse case scenario for me, I was hoping for some vintage, but the oldest card I found was beat up '69 Jim Hunter.

yeah I think a match and some gasoline would be a better solution. Right now the best thing would be to bust all that junk wax and hope you can hit an auto card or elite card (odds are astoundingly bad) and sell the singles versus trying to get 10 bucks a box for it.

What do you do with 1991 Score?

Wow, to think how much money he or she spent on all that makes me a little sick...
Did you check all those sorting boxes under the plastic? Could be something in there
  • That would be funny if there were a few boxes of Stadium Club HI series in there!
  • Ok, I actually might be interested in purchasing a few boxes(a couple dozen) and a few Starting Lineups. Please PM me her email address/information. Thanks

There never is-- and I speak here from experience. Seeing the stacks of 3200 or 5000 ct. boxes always swells your breast with hope, until you open the lid. If there was ever an equivalent for 'fool's gold' in the world of baseball cards it would be the stack of these boxes in someone's basement.

One good thing, at least her basement doesn't leak. I live near Peoria, and with all the wetness in the past yer, virtually all basements had water in them.

Boo that is the truth, you would have to work very very hard to make anything back off this lot. I value my time too much to be trying to sell 92 Fleer and Score cards for 5 cents on the bay or at card shows.

I'd be interested in a road trip. I'm in Chicago. Could we get a few board members to meet, pony up some $$$ and then have a draft in the basement where we take turns picking stuff? Might make for a fun afternoon. I'd bring the beers. We'd need to get the kid out of there (no alcohol).

She wanted $5,000? What if we get her down to $2,500 cash and five of us pony up $500 each? Just a thought.

I honestly dont think all that stuff is worth $500 total.

The problem is that there are too many people who figure that since they paid $5000 for it 20 years ago, than it has to be worth twice that now.

It looks like a bunch of crap to me.
  • I do see a box of 93 Upper Deck. If it's Series 2, that right there is worth like $25. If there happens to be 100 boxes of them laying around somewhere, then that's $2500. image
  • stevekstevek Posts: 29,534 ✭✭✭✭✭
Guess she figured (like a lot of others at that time) that by salting away all these unopened packs, then one day she'd be a millionaire - turns out more like a hundredaire. LOL
  • It is the same old story played out in every city across this country. By that I mean a large hoard of late 80's early 90's junk filling someone's basement, spare room or closets.

As "Tuff Stuff" magazine stated, "it was a (pathetic) period of overproduction".

Every card shop owner will tell you they have long ago ran out of patience with people bringing in box loads of this junk for sale and wanting the shop owner to spend hours to look at each card.

yea, so she could "truthfully" list it on Craigslist as a "60's - 90's" baseball cards lot.

This lady has no idea what she has. They were her husband's cards who passed away a few years back. I quizzed her over the phone what years the cards were from and she had no idea. I rolled the dice guessing it was a losing proposition but my curiosity got the best of me, and was right. The only reason I went is because it was close to where I live. With the work involved, I think a fair offer would be $400 for everything.

When I left, she was convinced some lucky soul was going to make it big with this collection. I didn't even have the heart to tell her the truth. Just thanked her for her time and went on my way regretting I lost 3 hours of my life I'll never get back.

The first box may be "worth" $25 but try selling 100 of them on Ebay. By the 100th, unless spread way far apart, you are probably down to about $12.50. image

  • << <i>I didn't even have the heart to tell her the truth >>

And why is this?? Instead of setting her straight on what she has, you allow her to go on thinking she is sitting on a gold mine. People should not be afraid to tell others what the score is. She's an adult. She would have gotten over the fact that her husband collected a bunch of worthless crap.
  • jeffcbayjeffcbay Posts: 8,950 ✭✭✭✭
I had a smaller version of this happen a couple weeks ago when another friend of mine asked if I would take a look at her cards. I told her before I even got there that if it's baseball ranging anywhere from 1986 to 1992, they're pretty much worthless. When I got there, that's what they were. I let her down easy. I took a couple factory sealed sets that I could move easy for her, and made her about $30.

At least this woman's stock is mostly unopened boxes and SLUs... those would be pretty easy to move. I still would stand by my $1 per box quote. Anything more than that wouldn't be worth the trip.

I didn't feel it was my obligation to "set her straight" on her expectations, especially since I didn't want any of it. If I felt it was my job to properly ground every person's expectations I came in contact with, I wouldn't get much done.

    <<< She wanted 5k for everything >>>

In my opinion, this lady "knew" basically what the cards were worth - I mean why would she come up with some 5K figure - why not ask for 100K based on that huge quantity...or even ask for more just to see what happens. I think she likely has already been visited by others, and perhaps the "really good" stuff, if there was any there, was cherry picked, or she has already received other responses similar to those of bbcemporium.

I think at this point, she might take an offer of $1,000 just to get rid of it.

She already said other people had looked at it and wanted to buy certain items, but she was clear that it was an all or nothing deal. If she ever wants to sell it, the price will eventually come down. She seems to be a very nice pleasant lady, and I truly think in her opinion she is "giving" these cards away for 5k.

In a side story, I have a guy here locally who used to have tons of stuff from that era. He has a lot of non-sport wax from that time. A short list of that includes 800 unopened wax boxes of Desert Storm, Strawberry Shortcake, Smurfs, Care Bears, etc etc. He has told me that he would be willing to see all of them for $2 a box.

He also has 3 boxes of 1977 Charlie's Angels, 1 Jaws 3D, a sealed case of 1989 Donruss Baseball, a case of 89-90 Fleer basketball, two boxes of 1981 Donruss Golf, 12 sets of 1981 Donruss Golf, but he wont include those in the $2 a box thing. I offered him 1500 for all of it, but he said he didnt want to take that big a loss on the non-sports. LOL!! I asked him what the difference is between losing $12 a box if you sell it at $2 or $13 if you sell it at $1, which was my offer.

Funny the 1989 upper deck set is probably worth more than all of the unopened wax...combined
  • Looked like the 1993 Topps racks are just 2nd series? At leat the 1st series has Jeter rookies. The best thing for her to do is sell what she can, and she can maybe make $1,000. Some dealers buy junk wax, there really is a market for everything.
