For coins I have a SDB. IMO insurance for coins is not cost effective. OTOH, I have auto, house, health, personal liability and (the San Andreas fault being my near neighbor) earthquake insurance. Of them all earthquake insurance is the only one I go back and forth on. It's about 2X the cost of my house insurance and there is a 10% deductible. Oh, and there is an alarm service on the house.

Ditto, except I have disability insurance as well. Skyman, the deductible is now 15%. My earthquake policy is slightly less than my homeowner insurance policy. The closest fault to me is the Inglewood fault, and it's not in the same league as the San Andreas (fault).

  • << <i>Last time I checked with the ANA insurance, it cost 0.5% to insure what is kept in the safety deposit box. I think insuring at home costs 1%, and there are many requirements, like a complete alarm system that notifies police or alarm company person. Also, one's entire collection must be insured, not just part of it.

I did not think I wanted to pay at the rate annually of $100 per $10,000 insured value. That works out to $1,000 annually per $100,000 insured value. If anything is kept at home, the 0.5% rate cannot be used.

I doubt things have changed much with the ANA coin insurance. >>

At those rates I would not buy it either. Hugh Wood is less that half that much for me. No alarms, and not required to be in a SDB.

My collection is currently not insured but most coins of any value sit in a SDB. I have a few guns but would be reluctant to use one to shoot an intruder. My son is almost 18 and my house has kids in it all the time. I built my house in a way that certain areas would not have traffic in them. My sons room is basicly self contained with bathroom and gameroom and access in and out of the house thru his bedroom. It is my sons job to see that his friends do not leave those areas. kids can do stupid things and i would hate to shoot at what i thought was an intruder to turn out to be a drunk kid.

I live in the country on 100 acres and my house sits 800 or more feet off the main road with one way in and out. Few neighbors and none very close. I am sure i would feel different if i lived in a house with zero lot line and neighbors 10 feet or less away on all sides. Until last year we never even locked any of the 5 doors that lead to the outside of our house. Now we are trying to remember to take the keys out of all the cars.

Does your Smith and Wesson shoot by itself when you are not there?
  • "My collection is split up in several SDBs. Yes, I'm exposed to a risk, but its manageable (to my mind)." Thats the secret. Dont put everything in one spot.

That's interesting. I would feel a lot less safe in your situation than living in an upper-middle class, inner-ring mature suburb, as I do. I guess it's a matter of what you grow accustomed to.

There is a lot more to deterring a robbery than just owning a gun. Owning guns did nothing to prevent thieves from stealing my guns. LOL

I don't insure what's kept at the bank but have a small policy with Hugh Wood to cover the few coins that come and go from the house.
There are so many kids coming and going from my house at all hours that nothing is going to happen that's not noticed. Kids can actually be a great security system.

If a bad guy wants to try to guess which 15 minutes I'm in rems sleep each night thy should have good luck. Otherwise, they should have said goodbye to their loved ones. Do you have kids? Of course I grew up hunting squirrels in the trees with my ears first, eyes second, and a single 22 short bullet to the head third--all 3 happening much more quickly than you just read them, but since I've had kids nothing happens in my house at night that I don't hear it.

One thing everyone should think of to keep beside their weapon of choice would be a tactical flashlight to make sure you don't shoot a drunk neighbor who is trying to sneak into bed with his angry wife, except he stumbled into the wrong house; or some other relatively innocent.

I'd be curious with all the folks mentioning their guns, if confronted would they have the stones to use it.image

What I have learned is most of the ones that talk about it, are the ones when the time comes....... they freeze.

Give me a real life example that you personally know of? I'll bet you're all talk, just speculation. However, those who don't believe in guns often don't because they "wouldn't have the stones to use them". It is good they realize this.

There are germs of truth in that statement. Some will and some won't. Firing a gun in a house at a human being is not an easy assignment. MJ
