So Why Does This Coin Look The Way It Does?

I realize I couldn't be lucky enough for it to not be PMD but yet curiosity still has been eating away at me as to why it looks the way it does. I ruled out plating since the lettering on the coin remains brown but behind the lettering it has the zinc color. I also ruled out acid because other than the coin having a zinc color to it and a rim ding or two the coin appears normal and weighs out normal. It also doesn't stick to a magnet. Whatcha think caused this?

Agree. Looks plated or coated with mercury and then it circulated.
