I think we have learned how callous and insensitive we can be when it's not our backside in the frying pan. Of course, if the tables were turned, we would be expecting all the comfort and sympathies in the world. What a sad commentary........

So sorry to hear about this most unfortunate incident. Best of luck for a positive outcome
still, one can't help but wonder what was for dinner that night? (most of us would drive hungry and wet our pants if need be, rather than leave even a few dollars in coins unattended in a parked car, even for a moment. Must have been a tasty meal to sit down to with over a million in a couple suitcases in the back of the van)

It's nice of you to kick a guy when he's down. I'm certain had he to do it again, he'd make different choices but that's no reason for your callous remarks or name calling. This is a time to circle the wagons, not tear someone apart.
To the numismatic community at large, I am amazed at the out pouring of support you've given to a friend in need...Not only monetarily but in simple kindness.
I've been reading the last few posts, and 13 Paces East will never win any awards for compassion or tact to be sure...but there's a point buried in there, though not the one he's trying to make. At the risk of being accused of stirring things up...let's face it, if it was Joe Schmuck Coin Dealer from Poughkeepsie telling this story, would anyone be circling any wagons or raising a 6 digit reward fund? Heck no. He'd be getting flame broiled by the usual suspects here for doing a boneheaded thing. I suppose that my point is that just because someone's well known, respected and a nice guy (and he is!), they shouldn't get a free pass when it comes to common sense or the lack thereof. And, perhaps some of this compassion and kindness will hopefully carry over when others share stories like this who don't happen to be as well known.
Whether some of us are " use " to carrying a couple hundred cash, others are used to carrying far larger sums. Having done so countless times does lead one to become complacent.

Re: Slabbed coins - There are some coins that LIVE within clear plastic and wear their labels with pride... while there are others that HIDE behind scratched plastic and are simply dragged along by a label. Then there are those coins that simply hang out, naked and free
<< <i>I suppose that my point is that just because someone's well known, repsected and a nice guy (and he is!), they shouldn't get a free pass when it comes to common sense or the lack thereof. >>
I do not agree.
He is well known BECAUSE he is respected and a nice guy and helpful to so many that he EARNED our compassion and kindness.
I am sure he is already kicking himself regarding his common sense or lack of thereof. We do not need to kick more sand in his face.
Our job is to keep his spirits up going forward and THEN when all the coins are recovered, we can start with the lectures. But the time for the lectures is not now.

Nobody should have to earn compassion and kindness. I sure hope that I don't have to.
Edit: And why shouldn't the lectures be now? We're not pounding on Julian, or at least I hope we're not. Sure, I have sympathies for him too. But let's be honest, we need to learn from other people's "mistakes," and the best time to do that is now while it's still fresh in our heads.
Edit #2: Ah yes, I am "respected and a nice guy and helpful" among my colleagues and friends, but I'm not well known, so ... (and I don't really want to be well known).
I am concerned that the perps haven't made their inevitable boneheaded move, yet. I am sure Julian has had his lawyer review the insurance policy to ensure the denial is well founded and if not to pursue remedies.

Well said Orville. This could happen to any of us.
While the coin critics can disect the event and create labels for the participants I believe it to be much more positive for us to offer our support in whatever way possible for a fellow human being. Isn't that what we would really want if it had happened to us? We have the ability to positively impact the present moment and possibly the future by offering positive support in any number of ways. While the reward fund is a token of support a prayer or positive word is just as powerful and perhaps even more. Ray Hinkelman Eye Appealing Coins www.eyeappealingcoins.com
I'm the moron because i have no compassion? I simply said what most of you were thinking.
I mean COME ON !!! Lose a million dollars and you should be called out on it. When i was a child and i did something STUPID, and most likely got hurt, the first words out of my dad's mouth would have been something like "Way to go bonehead. Hurts don't it? Bet you don't do that again."
And no, my butt would never be in that frying pan. I WOULDN'T LEAVE A MILLION DOLLARS WORTH OF COINS IN MY CAR ! Ever. That's beyond stupid.
But i do feel bad for the guy. And i sincerely hope they catch em and he gets most of his stuff back. But with the big reward and all the chatter it's almost certain the bad guys know to lay low. Crack it out and sell what you can. Sit on the rest for a long time or just ditch it. A lot of classic and rare coins gone forever. Maybe it would have been better to not make so much noise and wait and see if they try and sell early.
13paceseast- While i do not disagree with what you are saying, in the politically correct world today we just are not suppose to say it. lol
Everyone has a different comfort level and most will not do what others do. I keep a lot of coins on my desk at home, many would flame me for that. Others go to such extremes that they take pics of the coins and put the coins in the SDB.
You can not live in total fear that something bad is going to happen, you just try to minimize the risk.
