Is it true the US Mint is going to start minting 5 oz silver coins?

A friend just IM'd me and said the US Mint is going to make 5 oz silver coins. Is that true? I wonder what the designs will look like.

Same design as the national parks quarters next year.

Really? So we can buy like really big quarters? Sigh... I guess if the price is right silver is silver, but I had high hopes for some really nice art on BIG silver planchets...

    Thanks for clarifying the news...

I like this design (well the moon part anyway) -

It's about time the Mint gets with the program. And why not, the rest of the world does it.

  • I like the idea...I love the 1988 Young Astronaut medals, nice and clunky, great paperweights too. BUT if they have the silver for those then where the heck is the 2009 Proof Eagle??? ( I just saw the news, nevermind, damn silver proof czar I bet!! )
  • I collect 5oz proof Ag coins, and unless the US Mint's designs are prettier than my treasured Pandas and Libertads, I'm not buying.

Why is it sad? It's not like the mint will force you to buy them. Right? Also, the Congress comes up with these ideas so don't get mad at the U.S. Mint.

You want closer to melt, then you will have to buy

the Mints 500 pound silver coin.UPS drivers are very

unhappy about delivering these. Especially holding

the coin package while you sign the receipt.
