Wax, Vending, Rack, or Cello? *Poll*

I'm looking to put together a 1983 Topps Set because that was the year I was born in. So what I'd like to know is which types of boxes/packs should I buy mostly in order to pull high grade cards? I am prettty sure that this has been discussed on here in the past but I couldn't locate a thread where it did.

Thanks
-Adam

I'd bet anything rack packs are going to be the consensus.

I said other because I have no idea and I wanted to see the results. image
  • Would love to know which 5 doofuses said vending.
  • Best bet would probably be buy a Rack box, cheaper than wax or cello, and better condition than vending. (even though I did pull a 78 ryan PSA 9 from vending).

I would go with a rack box. image

    PS: I voted for rack.

The same doofuses that give you 4 stars on S/H charges even though S/H is Free. image
  • best results for me come from rack packs.

I thought I was a doofuse for saying rack packs!

Given the year, factory sets typically yield the most consistent cards, then rack packs, vending, wax and cello.

I'd buy mint sets already assembled. '83 sets are cheap. You start opening material and you're bound to waste $.
  • Full sets are no fun.

Wax boxes about 130 each 540 cards 24 cents a card
Cello boxes about 135.00 each 672 cards 21 cents a card.
Rack boxes about 180.00 each 864 cards 21 cents a card

    I was talking quantity.

It's even better than that Mike as rack boxes actually have 1224 cards (24 racks with 51 cards per), so it's less than 15 cents per card, and much cheaper per card than cello boxes.

My last wax box sold for $95 and my last rack sold for $195. Nonetheless, you are right. It is cheaper per card.

I would still think buying raw sets or bulk lots in the .02 - .03 card range would be the way to go.

The only way to go in my opinion.

Sets go for $30. A wax box will be around $100. Wil take at least 2 boxes to build a set, and that's not a guarantee.

For a set like 1983, I'd but three complete sets, put the best example of each card into your set, and resell the other two. Trying to build by opening packs will cost you a ton.

of course the answer depends on which year and sport you are referring to. Since racks do not exist for every year and sport, the answer may be by default -- wax. Note there are more cards in a cello, so the chances of getting better cards in a cello may be better than wax. Naturally, if racks exist, they are the hands down winner.
  • The ???? was HIGH GRADE CARDS.

Rack packs seem to have a tendency for more OC cards than wax or cellos. ??? was not rookie expensive pulls.

I've busted 3 wax, 2 vending and 1 rack box of 83 Topps from BBCE in the last couple years. I thought it would be "fun" to build a registry set strictly with my own submissions.

I thought rack was by far the best followed by wax, with the vending being the worst by far. They're just packed too tightly in that flimsy box.

As others have stated it would be much cheaper to just buy a complete set. I opened all 3 wax, the rack box and finally in my first vending I pulled a Dave Stewart. I have 6 - 10 copies of most cards in the set but just that single, solitary Dave Stewart. So you may have to do a lot of ripping to get a complete set.

Buy ONE 1983 Factory Set. You won't be disappointed and it will make the other options look very expensive.
