1878-CC Morgan

anablepanablep Posts: 5,034 ✭✭✭✭✭
I mentioned in this thread that I purchased this Morgan at a coin show this past weekend.

I traded up from a 78-CC in 63 to this one. Let me know what you think!!

Thanks for looking...

Not a lot of eye appeal. Does the coin look like the picture or is the picture washed out? Looks like there is no luster.

Lots of luster on this one, just can't capture it well today. Poor lighting...

Strong for the grade. One cheek tick away from 65.

I like it except for the "appearance" of subdued luster which might well be because of the lighting. Looks original and it's a nice strike and not very many marks.

I think that is one of the better examples of a 64 that I have not seen in a very long time. image

I agree, in that my immediate reaction was dipped out and retoned, because of the apparent lack of luster. I'd like to see a photo picking up the luster before I get all effusive about your pickup.

Given the couple of the dings on the cheek, which would limit it to a PCGS MS64, I doubt that PCGS would have awarded it a 64 if it WERE dipped out - I just can't tell.

I hope that my honesty isn't construed as criticism.

Nice suttle rim toning, and a grade that fits the coin, nice cheek.
If it weren't for the two tiny hits on the lower jaw, I could see it as a 5.

Agreed, the coin appears nice for the grade, assuming the coin has full luster.

I think you did very well.

It looks like a solid ms64.

Anablep: I like your new 1878-CC as an MS-64. It has a well struck reverse (eagle's talons and left leg). It seems that many mint state 1878-CC's have velvety mint luster which is a bit more subdued and less flashy than many others with either Satiny or Semi-PL luster.

If the two reed contact marks on Miss Liberty's lower cheek/jaw area were in a less obvious (non prime focal) area, I bet it would have received the MS-65 grade. The TPGS's are tough on handing out the MS-65 grade for these because of the resulting 3X price differential jump from 64 to 65.
