Called Steve, added some junk boxes, and PAID!

Bill, I bet my carp is carpier than your carp!

    1995 Studio box
    1996 Studio box
    1997 Leaf Series 2 box
    1997 Select box
    1998 Topps Series 2 box

If you look at my Ripken Basic Set, you would understand why I bought these. Need to do some upgrading, and I've already drained ebay trying to find these cards in minty-fresh. I'll start a new thread with my extracurricular ripping results.

    Thanks Bill and BBCE!! image
  • Paid. I also added (1) 81-82 OPC Hockey pack. I want the Coffey RC!
  • I paid.
  • All paid up. Thanks Bill for getting this together.
  • According to Steve, we set a group rip record for having the most packs paid for on the 1st day. The only 2 that haven't paid yet haven't logged in to CU yet today.

We just bought $3457.44 worth of product, not including the extra carp a lot of us added to our orders. I mean it's not a 1986/87 Fleer Basketball box break, but it's a pretty healthy group rip!

Nice variety for everyone! Good job Bill!

I agree nice selection Bill. It would be nice if we could do a group rip at least once a month.

My daughter was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 2 (2003). My son was diagnosed with Type 1 when he was 17 on December 31, 2009. We were stunned that another child of ours had been diagnosed. Please, if you don't have a favorite charity, consider giving to the JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation)

  • Dang, sat here for an hour figuring out what to add to my purchase. For some reason I felt I needed to stay under $100. I'm 24 minutes late!!!! Well, total cost was $99.45, how selfish of me. I added 86 and 84 Topps football packs and a couple 91 Stadium Club packs to open on Monday night. Good luck all on your breaks!
  • eagles33eagles33 Posts: 2,684 ✭✭✭
are there any sequence tricks with the 81 topps football. I wouldn't mind leaving one sealed.. but no will power with the temptation of gem mint montana inside. I don't own any sealed packs. back in 91 or 92.. i left 2 packs of sealed 91 stadium club as part of the set i put together.. but a few years later after favre blew up.. i opened them and got zero.. and those were only $2 packs.

This will keep me from playing Poker, so I'm all for it. It's amazing how fast these sell out. Maybe we can do a group rip on the 71 Topps or 54 Topps box.

Actually those have both been discussed before. General consensus was that the risk was not worth the potential reward. The high value on those is based on the rarity of finding them unopened and not the potential cards inside.
  • MULLINS5MULLINS5 Posts: 4,517 ✭✭✭
because these sell out so fast maybe each months group rip could be put together and posted on a specific day/weekend of the month? i hate in the past coming in late and seeing everything gone so quick. guys here are good to let a few packs go here and there to those who come in late.

just a suggestion, not a complaint - very happy overall image

I picked up my packs today from Steve and I wasn’t planning on ripping any of them. I was going to have them all graded for my collection. I noticed that my 81 had a bad rip in the wrapper so I decided that it would be fun to rip just one. I am pretty happy with the decision. The centering is a little off T/B but it falls well with in the limits of a 9 at least . I also needed the Monk for my graded collection. The pack was pretty well centered and the corners were razor sharp.

  • That's a great looking and cards pulled are the sweetest- congrats!
Thankfully it had a bad wrapper, huh!

This might be a stupid question but does this kind of mix up happen at the factory or elsewhere, if you get what I’m saying?

    That's not cool. image

  • jeffcbayjeffcbay Posts: 8,950 ✭✭✭✭
I've heard of that happening before (basketball/hockey). I'm sure someone else can weigh in on this subject better than me, but I know I've heard this happening before, in those packs in particular.

Felicia has a 70s super cello with baseball and football cards inside, I believe..

Collecting 1970s Topps baseball wax, rack and cello packs, as well as PCGS graded Half Cents, Large Cents, Two Cent pieces and Three Cent Silver pieces.

I think most hockey guys finding basketball cards in their hockey pack would be like, "okay, why did this happen?" and then when they found out it was an issue with the factory say something like, "oh, cool."

But I have a feeling that if a basketball guy pulled hockey cards from his basketball pack, he'd chuck 'em and be like what the #@heck!

...not saying leaftech did that, but I do think the majority would

I found it kind of funny and cool... I have no hate towards hockey and I'd consider myself more of a basketball guy. I only bought 1 pack for the heck of it so it was not a big deal to me. But if I bought several packs and it happened I might be pissed!

  • The hockey cards sure do look nice and mint, so does the basketball, but they belong there, lol.
  • If I get any hockey cards in my baseball packs, I hope they at least look as nice as the ones Leathtech got.

How about this, packs: You give me one Murray or Carew that is a no-brainer PSA 9, and 35 hockey cards, and we'll call it good.
'Sir, I realize it's been difficult for you to sleep at night without your EX/MT 1977 Topps Tom Seaver, but I swear to you that you'll get it safe and sound.'

Assuming the mix of basketball and hockey was intended by Topps, I imagine these packs could be graded. Would/could the variety be designated on the slab and what would that mean as far as value? Up? Down?

Are you saying like if you could see through the back of a pack of basketball a hockey guy? I think there are some errors of hockey cards and basket ball cards being printed on the same card, front hockey, back basketball - these cards don't sell for much when they are on the bay, and I don't think PSA grades them.
  • jswietonjswieton Posts: 2,870 ✭✭✭
Now that I looked closer at my pack. I too have a hockey card on the back or my pack and it is a pretty decent hit. It looks like it is #10 Bryan Trottier. This is very strange, that does not appear to be resealed. I wonder how PSA will grade this if it hasn’t been resealed???

I just got this message back from Steve at BBCE regarding the 78 basketball packs.

    "John,
Yes, this rarely happens, but does occasionally pop up. In fact, I have
had a whole case of basketball in the past that was half hockey and half
basketball. They are not resealed or tampered with, but happened at Topps.
This box must have been from the same case I opened last year.

Recently, I authenticated some cello packs for PSA that were from 1980.
The top half of the pack was baseball. The bottom half below the gum was
all football. They were some of the coolest packs I ever saw!

    Thanks! Steve"
  • daddymcdaddymc Posts: 3,080 ✭✭✭
If the cards seen through the back are hockey, can you tell that the cards on the front are basketball? If so, it sounds like they can be slabbed and that the variety might be noted on the slab.
