Was going to beat my 1-day Wheat Cent record, but THESE GOT IN THE WAY! wink, wink

My one-day record for wheats is 13... I knew I was close to that today after my 4 hour hunt...These are some of the things that KEPT ME FROM GETTING A NEW WHEAT CENT RECORD, :-)

1894-O Barber Quarter and 1958D roosevelt dime. The barber quarter was quite the surprise. Before digging it I was surprised how loud the beep was and thought it was some "canslaw" since it was deeper than the initial plug. Ended up being about 6 inches down.

Yup, 9 old New Hampshire highway tokens. Someone must've been angry a few years ago when they stopped accepting them at tolls. Must've tossed them out the car window, haha. Most are bent or nicked...angry man, or lawn mower?

Uh huh, even Santa tried getting in the way of my record Wheat Cent day. Both are dated 1995.

Hot Wheels made an appearance. date on this one is 1968

Not shown are the 1949 Candadian cent, which also took away from my efforts for a record wheat cent day!

The ones that really got in the way were the 3 Indian Head Cents! 1878, 1899 and I think the other is 1873, but I'm not certain. Didn't know I had a single IHC until I got home and inspected everything more closely. A nice little surprise. I'm soaking them now. The soil here is horrible on copper.

Finally, after all the "clutter" above, I only ended up with 11 wheats! Shown below are the 11 wheats and 3 IHCs.

Seemed to find a little bit of everything today, which is fine with me. Never know what will pop up next.

You must be hunting in a spot where people must continue to lose things. Looks like the tokens were hit by a mower.

Can you imagine how much it must have sucked to have lost a quarter in 1894!?

Well... based on the 9 New Hampshire highway tokens and 2 New Hampshire Christmas tree ornaments... I live in Florida, haha. Just kidding, I really do live in New Hampshire.
  • Great finds, especially the Barber quarter!

I'm sure you know but be careful when cleaning the green coins. They can be brittle and crumble if you are too rough with them.

I bet that was a lot of fun regardless of how much of a pain that other "crap" was in keeping you from getting a new 1-day wheatie record. I'd really hate to have your "problem". Hahahahahahaha
  • Where were you hunting? Park, old school, old house, where?

I guess you could call it a park-ish area. I think the key is finding a spot where people go (duh! of course)... but to metal detect out of the direct path of where most detectorists would go. Start there, then work your way towards the most obvious places. This strategy has worked very well for me at several places. Or, if starting in the most obvious place, dig the iffy/very weak signals. If someone before you got the top stuff, there's always some deeper stuff they missed.

If that Hot Wheels Custom El Camino was in better condition, that would be a $200-$300 item, or more. It's one of the rarer issues, and while the chassis is dated 68, it was issued in 71. (If my memory on Hot Wheels History is correct) It's also, obviously, not complete, it is from the rare stunt set and at one point held a small plane on a missing bed cover. With the plane it would be, probably, the best MD Hot Wheels find in history, and it's probably in the Top 10 as is. When I get home and have access to my books, I might be able to tell you how many are known, and how many in red. (At least...I think it was red once!)

Even so...you might want to have it restored...good luck with that!

Whoa, thanks for the info! I had to check to make sure I didn't toss it, haha. But I found it in my toy car bin. It does look to have been red in its former state. I actually never washed it out after I found it, so it's still caked with dirt. I'd be interested to see what else you can find out about it!
