Took a Gamble and Bought a Jordan Rookie - It Almost Worked Out

I took a gamble and bought a PSA 7 Jordan Rookie from a first-time eBay seller. The scan was very poor but the centering appeared great.

Got a great price - $372

I thought for a moment that I was scammed (I knew it was risky) but all appeared legit.

The seller confirmed that he shipped on the day following the auction -- and it arrived today . . .

image

I guess it was not meant to be.

I expect that he's going to be more bummed than I -- most folks just don't realize how PWEs are processed. He listed shipping as "USPS Priority Flat Rate Envelope"

To add insult to injury, I also received today a set of (before shipping) NrMt/Mt 1967 Pin-ups that were also poorly packaged and several got dog-eared -- the most damage (of course) to the Mantle.

Man I'm glad it's a 3-day weekend.

Scott

Wow, thats crazy to send a slabbed card in a PWE..I hope you do a paypal claim if he doesnt refund!
  • AllenAllen Posts: 7,165 ✭✭✭
Sure thats not a reprint in that broken slab?
  • Return the card to the seller for a full refund. It was not delivered as advertised, and shipped as listed.

I'd file the PP claim today. The seller can close the claim with a refund anytime they want.

Thats a good point by Allen...buyer cracks out a real Jordan, replaces it with a fake. Sends it in a bad shipping method to blame on the PO. Makes it tough to get a refund.

But the way it is cracked, i would say that probably happened at usps..that would be tough to crack like that purposely.
  • DboneesqDboneesq Posts: 18,219 ✭✭
UNREAL! How the hell do you send a graded card in a PWE? Even if he got ripped off and paid $2.00 at the PO for a padded envelope (or whatever the hell they charge for something you can buy in bulk for 25 cents) it probably would have arrived safely. AMAZING.

Thought: Any chance that the slab was already broken when it was put up for sale?

I hope you put i a claim and get your money back. Was it insured?

That's the most rediculous thing I've seen in a while. WTF was the seller thinking!?!?

Did you pay via paypal? If so, you should have no problem.

I like how he asks you to leave some positive feedback in the note.

    Hi Allen,

I thought about that possibility too for a second, but wouldn't that mean the seller would have had to crack the slab almost in the middle of it to make the switch? Or were you taking it from a different angle?

    Just wondering?

    Hi Scott,

Was your purchase made outside of eBay by any chance?

I did a search and couldn't find the auction anywhere. I wanted to check the seller out a little bit.

Just curious .... not trying to be intrusive image

I agree with the centering looks perfect. Only thing I can see obvious is the left corner is bad. Do you know what to look for if its a fake?
  • seablasterseablaster Posts: 188 ✭✭✭
I bid in that auction as well.

In lieu of the poor auction picture, I asked the seller for better pictures of the front and back of the card. He emailed me, but there were no pictures attached. He didn't reply to my follow-up email. This was shortly before the auctioned ended, however.

I hope you are able to resolve the issue. I still can't believe him mailing that item in an envelope.

It was on eBay (and paid via PayPal) but I really don't want to rat the guy out because I do believe it was an honest (albeit stupid) mistake.

If I find him unresponsive I'll be more than willing to give more detail.

If it was outside of ebay make sure you file a not received claim and delete this thread. There is no SNAD protection outside of ebay

Based on the seller's FB-total and registration date,
his PayPal account has a 21-day hold on it.

Since this is his first sale, maybe he did not know that.
But, a clear notice appears on the screen during the
    listing process.

I suspect the seller just lacks clues about how to ship stuff.

    ...................

Since the card is now out of the slab, it should be fairly

If the slab broke in the machine, an indent or worse might/would be expected.

If the slab suffered a crush injury in a bin, or was simply dropped flat onto a
concrete floor, there might not be an indent.

    ........

The fast solve is to determine if the card is genuine.

    ...........

OP should file the PP claim.

Check authenticity, if card is not damaged and its not bogus, you still get a PSA 7 for a good price. If you have a scan, scan the front. Most people can pick out fakes pretty easily

I have had PSA holders break during shipping three times, and all three times the card was in a bubble envelope. Shippers, always give PSA holders a cardboard sandwich for stability and added protection. I'm not surprised the Jordan was damaged in a PWE.

It seems holders break in the mail from blunt force, not from bending. Two of my cracked holders looked similar to the Jordan holder. I would imagine a large box, or something very heavy, fell on the envelope. PSA holders are not very strong.

    That sucks!!

Has the seller responded at all yet?

  • scotgrebscotgreb Posts: 809 ✭✭✭
No response yet from the seller, although I did receive a PayPal generated email confirming that the item was shipped.

I spoke with eBay customer service today and they were very helpful and understanding (I'm actually part of an ongoing customer service pilot that eBay is running). Their first move is to contact the seller, make him aware of the issue and (hopefully) resolve with a full refund. Without cooperation, they will begin investigation after five business days.

eBay has suggested that I do not (yet) return the card as it might complicate things to return it this soon.

Storm -- does this course of action sit well with you?

Thanks to all for the constructive feedback -- I'll keep the board posted.

    Scott

p.s. FWIW is still believe it was an honest (albeit stupid) mistake -- I've looked at the card and it appears genuine -- based on the common methods to identify a fake. The theory that the holder was "bluntly" hit seems most likely to me.

    Absolutely NOT!

I would NOT - UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES - participate in EBAY's
"Buyer Protection" scheme, as a buyer.

PayPal is - and always will be - the correct route to a remedy.

BUT, since you have already been captured by the EBAY creatures,
you need to stick with them.

Their new "program" is about the buyer/seller "hugging it out." I
just want my refund, and don't need/want a hug from a stranger.

There is a work around on that trap at the PP site.

    It has changed several times in the past 2-weeks;
they are trying to make it more difficult to bypass
    the new EBAY scheme.

Folks who cannot get around the trap online should
call a LIVE person at PP; best to ALWAYS ask for a

Regarding sending the item back -- eBay customer service suggested that I wait; however, I just received an email from eBay instructing me to return the item.

"Go ahead and send the item back to the seller, as they should be expecting the item as a result of this case"

. . . and as I am posting this message, I just received an email from the seller essentially apologizing for the problem.

    I'll continue to post updates.

It sounds like paypal is now making it more difficult for buyers to get a refund by routing them to this ebay resolution process...but aren't ebay and paypal one and the same? What is the point of having two different resolution processes in place, one from paypal and one from ebay, when the same parent company owns both entities?? How do these processes ultimately differ? I'm confused..

In theory, EBAY can resolve disputes/claims MUCH cheaper than PayPal can.

My concern is that EBAY simply cannot do the job at ANY cost. Thus, buyers
will suffer needless delays and sellers may or may not get a "fair" hearing.

EBAY is the merchant of record in on-EBAY PayPal transactions. It would make
sense for them to "resolve disputes/claims." The quality of EBAY's workers
causes me to doubt that they can get the job done, though.

    ..................

Sellers who accept the EBAY-resolution scheme should anticipate that EBAY
will, from time to time, dip into such sellers' PayPal accounts; and, if an alt
funding source is stipulated, EBAY will hit sellers' checking accounts as well.

Thw world's largest outlet mall really does not need/want small sellers.
