1995 Civil War Commemorative in "photo case"

In 1995, one of the options for the Civil War commems was a 2 coin set, proof half and dollar, housed in a plastic photo case box. The case was a hinged box designed to look like a case for tintype photos from the period, with a fake $10 gold piece (reverse showing) on the front and back of the case.

I have one of these and was wondering if there is any premium on them? I can't find a price listing for the set in any price guides.

Thanks

  • I am pretty sure there is a premium for the two coin sets. I have seen them a couple of years ago sell for $150.00 or so but times may have changed. I have the three coin set($5 dollar gold) with photo commem case and know for sure they sell around $350.00-$400.00 nowadays and that is quite a premium over cost.

The Gray Sheet bid - ask on the three piece Civil War Proof set is $350 - $385. My experience might be old but when I was building a set of modern commemorative coins for one of customers I purchased the Civil War in set in the photo case for the bid price.

I think the photo case is a neat item, but I'm not sure that it really brings much of premium, especially on the wholesale market for the three piece set. I don't know about the two piece set because I've bought and sold them.

I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

Thanks for the replies. I remember seeing one in a B&M back in 2006 being offered at $165. I've not seen any since and could not find listings anywhere.
