The coin that you can afford if you really want to....

.....but haven't yet aquired?

In the late 80's, before I started collecting, a high end dealer was trying to sell me on the investment value of rare coins. I looked through several binders of coins and really wasn't interested until I saw a 1799 Gold Half Eagle. The coin was raw and I have no idea of what the grade was. I was floored though by the beauty and historical significance of such a piece. After 8 years of serious collecting, I still have not bought a similar piece. Just waiting for the right one to come along I suppose.

That coin may have been used by George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, etc. When this coin was made, America was a young nation full of promise. I consider this coin to be very historially significant.

George Washington died in 1799 so there is a good chance his buying was mostly done.

There was nothing special about that particular piece. As a non collector at the time, I just did not know that nice coins from the 1700's were available. I can only speculate on the grade but it was in rather decent condition and really caught my eye.
